Singer, actress and renowned
entertainer Leigh Schindler has released her latest single, “Horn
in Claw.” It has been published on the Lici Records music label.
The track is preceded by her November 2013 track, “Which One,”
and by her 2012 debut EP, “Self-Titled.” She is perhaps most
often recognized, however, for her startling rendition of “You Know
I'm No Good” by Amy Winehouse. The new single, dark, brooding,
beautiful and lyrically poignant, showcases Schindler as a
thought-provoking, conscientious songwriter of much scope and sonic
complexity.
Schindler, who makes her home in
Southern California, claims as artistic inspirations artists such as
Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor, the Bird and the Bee, and Ani
DiFranco. Intuitively, her own work shares many of the best
attributes of these popular musicians, just as each of them dovetail
likewise with the work of the others. Schindler's “Horn in Claw”
has the jazzy, blue overtone of Winehouse mixed with the uniqueness
of Spektor, and given a hint of emotional aggression in the lyrical
one-two-punch style of DiFranco.
As the setting for this latest
offering, Schindler has painted a grim landscape of “bleached out
bones” and “warning cones,” peopled by a hopeless and shiftless
nation. “They don't care, they just ignore the flaws,” she sings.
The music itself has a smooth surface and lingering, echoing
spaciousness like a lake in the inner sanctum of a great cavern,
which lends an air of regret and sorrow to the piece. “Horn in
Claw” is undoubtedly one of Schindler's most touching singles to
date.
Leigh Schindler has been singing since
she was a little girl. “I always used to run around making up songs
about anything and everything,” she writes. “Life was a musical
and things just fell into place.”
Originally born in San Diego, Schindler
is a graduate of the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts
and of the Boston Conservatory of Musical Theatre in Massachusetts.
