Saleem, a longtime and well-loved stand-up comedian from Dayton, OH,
has released his newest show, “How Dare You!,” to wide acclaim. The long-playing digital album spans
approximately 45 minutes in 19 segments, with a bonus track containing thanks
and additional material moving it closer to the hour mark. This collection of Saleem’s newest material
is recorded live and uninterrupted from the stage, for a legitimate and
hilarious comedy club experience. Saleem’s
performance is charismatic and intelligent, fearless and irreverent, ridiculous
and hilarious.
The subject matter for this show ranges from the mildly
political to the absolutely absurd, with topics that include airplane security,
hyphenated racial backgrounds, and – Matthew McConaughey.
“Even if you agree with me about something, it’s not for
the same reasons,” says Saleem. “For
instance, I do believe people from different ethnic backgrounds can live in
peace. Just not in the same
neighborhood.”
Saleem’s comedy is a refreshing blend of maturity and
disrespect, of social awareness and general disregard. Every foolish angle of society is fair game
to him, but his delicate diction gives the distinct impression that he cares
deeply about humanity, too. Honesty is
his policy, and the slightest whiff of pretensiousness incites a jibe.
“Don’t call me African-American,” he says. “You may as well say you don’t think nothing
of me. You may as well call me a unicorn
or some other [thing] that don’t exist.”
This interest in humanitarian issues may be a lasting
effect of the late, great George Carlin, whom Saleem cites as a primary
influence, as well as Richard Pryor, and other comic geniuses of the twentieth
century. With the inertia he’s built up
leading to the release of “How Dare You!” (a career of over twenty years, in
fact) he is poised to take his rightful place among them.
He writes of this record, “This
comedy album is a message of liberty and laughter. It is my unreserved opinion of the society
that we live in, the passion for change and the confidence and faith in the
future that I believe in. I believe we
are living in a pivotal moment in history. This is my note in the chorus of the future, a
note of laughter, intelligence and light.”
And indeed, the note rings true:
laughter, intelligence, and light. Not
bad for $5.99.
