Elroy Sugarthroat releases 'The I Am Making Love EP'

Elroy Sugarthroat has released his latest official album, “The I Am Making Love EP.” The record has been released on the Electric Mountain Recordings music label. An extended-play collection of only four tracks, it has an approximate playing time of 28 minutes, making for a comprehensive introduction to Sugarthroat's work. “The I Am Making Love EP” technically belongs in the ambient electronica genre of music, but is highly experimental and dissimilar to most releases in the category.

Music fans unfamiliar with experimental ambient records will be surprised at the content of Sugarthroat's new EP because “The I Am Making Love EP” is, strictly speaking, not what is traditionally termed 'music.' It is a sonic collage, a loose, precisely deliberate assembly of textures that cohere through timbre and tempo. It is capable of suggesting and conveying emotion just as pop music can, but its spaciousness and lack of a predictable structure allow for more – infinitely more, and quite literally so. It is a drug administered aurally to aid creativity, open-mindedness, intellectual and perhaps even spiritual growth.

Audiophiles with tastes for ambient music will become enthralled and enraptured with “The I Am Making Love EP” almost instantly. Its overall sound is warm, raw, and full of analog tonalities, making it exceptional in terms of both quality and character in a genre overpopulated with unrestrained digital instrumentation. Sugarthroat utilizes rhythm and flow, but does not kowtow to the percussion section. The myriad moods of “The I Am Making Love EP” fly to the utmost intensities of rage, and alternately coast like gauze on a spring breeze with coolness and contentment.

Elroy Sugarthroat himself is based in Charlotte, NC. He names as main artistic influences musicians such as Brian Eno, John Coltrane, Iannis Xennakis, John Cage, and Yoko Ono, saying also that his work is informed by esoteric thinkers such as Robert Anton Wilson, Phillip K. Dick, James Joyce, C.G. Jung, Wilhelm Reich, and even the self-proclaimed non-comedian, Lenny Bruce.

In Sugarthroat's own words, “The I Am Making Love EP” is “headphone music for your vision quest. Music to receive esoteric messages from distant stars or other dimensions with. Music to dissolve into with your lovers. Music for rewiring your nervous system, encouraging the reality engineer within you help make the universe as awesome as it can be. It is my hope that the adventurous listener will feel renewed upon listening to these songs, completely turned on and ready to live, create, f--- or just enjoy tingling in the void naked and unashamed.”
