Singer-songwriter Miriam
Chemmoss has released her newest, long-playing and principal record,
“Lovebird,” on Black Pearl Music. The album is a celebration of everything
decent about humankind, the beauty of peace, of love, and of unity, and it provides
a well-suited collection of anthems and lyrics to this end. Chemmoss’ record
includes 15 original tracks comprising very nearly an hour of extremely melodic
music.
The music of Miriam Chimmoss is easygoing without being
flippant, marrying the upbeat, youthful positivity of Sheryl Crow to the
maturity of clarion-voiced chanteuses like Dido or Whitney Houston. Perhaps
most prominent, however, “Lovebird” is a display of musical culture in general,
with homages to certain traditions standing out among Chemmoss’ collection of tunes.
Reggae is represented, as is salsa, hip hop, rumba, soukous, and American pop, all
with their own distinct and unmistakable flavors.
Her lyrics are also multicultural, with Swahili lyrics
intertwining between her English lines with a resulting elegance that would
perhaps not otherwise be possible. Her individual character is most plainly to
be heard in the short skit, “ET Phones Home,” in which the famous
extraterrestrial, here heard as a young female through an autotune effect,
calls his (or her) parents to ask for help getting home, travel plans having
gone awry here on Earth. Chemmoss also wears her heart on her sleeve in “Ode to
Daddy,” a deeply moving and earnest psalm to her father. Her home language is
perhaps most beautifully showcased here.
Of the moral her album might portray to her
listeners, Chemmoss says simply, “My single message is the urgency of peace,
love and unity. It is a call to love oneself and others responsibly and
bravely.” There are complex and conscientious ideas in her music, too. “There’s
encouragement to leave the drama of the past behind,” she writes, “not to wait
for tomorrow but to embrace the present; it is a gift! Then, there are songs
that inspire us to say yes to life, yes to peace, yes to freedom, yes to protecting
the environment and yes to our differences.”
