Rising rapper Mac Shuan has released his
breakaway new LP
“Nationwide Grittin” on Stovetop Music. The
long playing album includes a whopping seventeen tracks of urban underground hip
hop, comprising over an hour of legitimate, high quality rap music. “High
quality” does not mean the usual, run of the mill, wanna be gangsta fare,
either; Mac Shuan has arguably published one of the most groundbreaking hip hop
records the genre has seen since the late nineties.
Of this, Shuan says, “Dont judge a CD by its
cover,” referring to the literal cover of his album, which looks intuitively
urban and streetwise. “I know the majority of the people are going to look at
my cover and think, ‘Hey, this is just another rapper,’ [but] once you play it,
you’re going to be surprised.” It takes less than a minute of listening to tell
that Mac Shuan never intended to make a typical rap record. It is, however,
exactly what he did intend: “a breath of fresh air,” to use his own words.
What Shuan means by this is that there are many
qualities setting “Nationwide Grittin” apart – and even a sight above. To start
with, Shuan can sing like a 1930s nightclub crooner. One of the album’s top
singles, the workingman’s anthem, “My Grind,” showcases his impeccable ear for three-part
harmony. The harmonies which abound on “Nationwide Grittin” are alone enough by
far to make the record a particularly golden release. “Click Clack” features
more such harmonies as well as a loop of violins, which although once a popular
feature of rap music, has since been forgotten as part of the DJ’s usual
arsenal. These and many other surprising features, such as Shuan’s remarkably
stunning slow jam, “Just Wanna Ball,” make “Nationwide Grittin” a record not to
be missed by any true fan of the urban underground music movement.
Mac Shuan’s “Nationwide Grittin,” hosted by Shadyvilles
DJ A.K. on Stovetop Music, is available everywhere online beginning early
January, 2013.
