Rock duo Dragon and Berr release third LP album 'Existential'

Alt-rock married couple Dragon and Berr have released their third official album, “Existential.” The LP features their popular single track, “Just a Hot Mess,” which dropped March 28. Both have been proudly published as independent releases without the involvement of the corporate music industry on the Loose Bolt Records record label. Eclectic, passionate, and bone-deep in its genuine rock roots, “Existential” proves Dragon and Berr to be a cornucopia of original sounds sure to capture the attention of music fans everywhere.

Dragon and Berr, whose sophomore LP “Pocket Full of Switchblades and Promises” appeared about one year ago at time of writing, have cited as main influences a broad variety of influences. These include Hall & Oates, Styx, Fall Out Boy, Panic at the Disco, Wicked Wisdom, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, the CoatHangers, the Ron Keel Band, the Beatles, and Halestorm.

But wait, Hall & Oates beside Panic at the Disco? Aretha Franklin in the same paragraph as Styx? Prince beside Halestorm? This seeming disparity reflects the heart of Dragon and Berr, in fact, who make music they love, not music that plops squarely into a box. This was also apparent on their highly experimental debut record, 2018's “Psychotic Break.”

Asked to describe the overall meaning of “Existential,” Dragon and Berr say it's a record about relationships. To hear them tell it, though, it's a good sight more than just that.

“The title of the album, 'Existential,' is concerned with existence,” they write, “especially human existence. What is more part of being human than relationships?”

This idea is a consistent thread throughout their new LP. They write of it in allusions to tracks on the album:

“Every song has some form of relationship theme, be that going out for the first time when you are young and just 'Livin your Lives,' Or going out with your wife for a night of 'Karaoke.' Sometimes you may be trying to reconnect with a love that you never even told them how you feel. In the album's case, it happens to be at a high school reunion dance that we hope love blooms. With the song 'Let Me Turn You On To a New Thing,' it's trying to inject something new in an old relationship.”

And of course, D and B hit all kinds of places on the stylistic spectrum.

“We pay tribute to some of the '60s songs we grew up with,” say Dragon and Berr. “We even have a break-up song and sneak a little soul/R&B into our rock with 'Not My Lady Anymore.' And not to worry, we do fly our off-beat pop-punk style with a liberal influence of jazz here and there … And if you blink you can miss the big band swing snuck in.”

Ultimately, “Existential” is an album about emotional complexity.

“Relationships are all about feelings,” they write. “Sometimes we only think of the basic stuff when we think of a relationship. We don't always think of maybe not being happy all the time or anxiety or vulnerability, feelings of jealousy, emotional intimacy, outright love and bliss and joy and so many other feelings we should embrace because that is being human. We touch on lots of different palettes of feelings in relationships in this album.”

“Existential” by Dragon and Berr on the Loose Bolt Records label is available from quality digital music stores online worldwide now. Get in early, alt-rock fans.

Plain releases debut LP album 'Refinements'

The alternative rock group known as Plain have released their latest official full-length album, “Refinements.” The LP album contains 10 original Plain tracks for an approximate total listening time of 40 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry. A soulful, bluesy, and highly textured form of hard alternative rock, “Refinements” by Plain returns to that raw sound which gave us bands like Mudhoney, Alice in Chains and Nirvana while also offering a unique spin on an old favorite.

Gothenburg, Sweden's Plain cites as main artistic influences Nirvana, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, Grouplove, and Foo Fighters. Of these, Plain's own style borrows mostly from the Dave Grohl projects, but with an updated, broader songwriting direction which generally allows for greater emotional range than music by any of the aforementioned. Plain also boasts raw, masculine, yet often elegant vocals which sometimes recall The Libertines, sometimes Type O Negative, and sometimes even the more aggressive moments of Sunny Day Real Estate. A punk aesthetic underlies the record.

With an emphasis on grit, narrative, and intriguing songwriting, “Refinements” by Plain has a little something for everybody.

Asked to describe the overall meaning of “Refinements,” Plain writes in humanistic terms.

“A common denominator for all songs on 'Refinements' is human relations,” writes singer-songwriter Albin Samuelsson. “I believe that the primal part of any relationship is to dare to talk openly with one another. It’s important to show respect for the people in your surroundings and to try to understand others' situations. If you’re open and talk to each other, you get more perspectives and more ingredients to build your own personality with. Then you no longer have a great reason to judge others because we’re not so different after all. Through speaking more openly, I believe that the world is going to become a more peaceful place.”

Audiophiles for whom lyrics form an important component have much in store with Plain. The band's current official bio notes that while “many songs you hear nowadays have little-to-no meaning at all, or are essentially about the same things over and over again. Albin has always used his songs to talk about matters that are important to him, and really doesn’t want to repeat himself in either music or words.”

Samuelsson is joined in Plain by bassist Simon Magnussen, guitarist David Barraza and drummer Rémi Valet, who will be performing with him live in the months following the LP record's release.

“Refinements” by Plain is available from over 600 quality digital music stores online worldwide now. Get in early, alternative rock fans.

Altro Sound releases debut EP album 'Deepest Point - Pt. 1'

The alternative rock crew known as Altro Sound have released their debut official EP album, “Deepest Point - Pt. 1.” The EP album contains four original Altro Sound tracks for an approximate total listening time of 15 minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the involvement of the corporate music industry on the Independent record label. Rolling, eclectic, and bursting with style, “Deepest Point - Pt. 1” showcases Altro Sound as a surprise indie rock treat for Q1 this year, and promises that they're a name to watch in 2019 and beyond.

Toronto, Canada's Altro Sound cites as main artistic influences Amy Winehouse, Leon Bridges, Kings of Leon, Paolo Nutini, Sam Cooke, Ray Lamontagne, Radiohead, John Mayer, Interpol, and others. Of these, Altro Sound's “Deepest Point – Pt. 1” shares elements with Winehouse, Kings of Leon and Radiohead, but with a delivery slightly more Nick Cave than John Mayer. The juxtaposition helps to balance the tone of the record, which is likely to appeal to a broad spectrum of alt-rock and indie fans.

With an emphasis on clean, precise guitar work, raw, genuine vocals, and songwriting with one foot in alternative rock and the other in the American south, “Deepest Point - Pt. 1” by Altro Sound has a little something for everybody.

Asked to describe the overall theme of “Deepest Point - Pt. 1,” Altro Sound writes, “Our debut album is a collection of works written through the highs and lows of adolescence and young adulthood. It's about the beacons of hope and the letdowns aplenty one experiences when transitioning into a realm of self-direction; the early steps away from institutional socialization of school and into the real world, alone.”

“Deepest Point – Pt. 1” has a clear aim, in fact, one which reaches the listener before the opening track is through. Altro Sound want to comfort.

“The message of music brings security in times when one is most alone and unfamiliar,” they write. “We want to share that gift – the feeling of unity within the human condition to others through vocally driven, lyrical accounts of growing up.”

Altro Sound's “Deepest Point” Parts 2 and 3 are scheduled to drop on Feb. 1 and Mar. 1, respectively.

Alt-rocker Winter Darks releases debut album 'Any Place All the Time'

The singer and songwriter of alternative rock music known as Winter Darks has released her debut album, “Any Place All the Time.” The record contains 11 original Winter Darks songs for an approximate total listening time of 42 minutes. It has been proudly published on the Spaceship Radio independent music label without the direction of the corporate music industry. Bearing elements of alt-rock, early indie rock and even pre-millennium emo, “Any Place All the Time” showcases Winter Darks as one of today's most intriguing rock songwriters.

Portland, Oregon's Winter Darks cites as main artistic influences Metallica's Kirk Hammett, classical guitar music, '90s grunge rock and alternative rock. Elements of these are easily discerned in “Any Place All the Time,” so that fans of the above are sure to find something they appreciate in this Freshman release from Winter Darks.

As her stage moniker hints, Winter Darks began in music under bleak circumstances. Asked to describe her start as an artist, Darks writes, “Isolation + trauma + desperation.” However, she also reveals that creativity in music comes naturally to her: “I started writing melodies and ideas the day I picked up a guitar.”

Darks has described her music as “gloomily optimistic.” A down-to-earth and discernably genuine person, she openly declares her songs “honest and relatable.” Nevertheless, Winter Darks does have an introverted facet to her musical character.

“When I started playing guitar,” writes Darks, “I didn't want anyone to hear what I had written, so I only played guitar for other people's bands and never sang. I wasn't that happy, so I tried making my own project using my songs but finding someone to sing my lyrics for me. I never found the right chemistry with anyone, so I tried playing and singing one of my songs at an open mic, and it finally felt right.”

“Any Place All the Time,” the debut album from Winter Darks, is available at over 600 quality digital music stores online worldwide now. Get in early, alt-rock fans.

Each EP sports six original tracks and approximately 25 minutes' worth of alternative rock. Three singles from the records are also being released. Inventive, well-written, and based on some of the most heartfelt vocal tones to appear in 2016, “Archive Box EP” and “Jus' Brown Songs” from Justin Nathanielson are notable alt-rock additions from the indie world to kick off the fall season.

Originally from Freeport on Long Island, New York, Justin Nathanielson cites as main artistic influences such disparate legends as Portishead, David Bowie, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Sade, Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin, Muddy Waters, U2, the Doors, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, John Lee Hooker, the Police, Earth, Wind & Fire, Santana, the Black Crowes, Stone Temple Pilots, Johnny Cash, and Genesis.

His own music borrows mostly from the alternative rock movement of the early-mid nineties. The singing of AIC's Jerry Cantrell and late front man Layne Staley can be heard in Nathanielson's eerie, sharp harmonies, and his careful attention to song structure and lyric poignancy also recall songwriting like that of Scott Weiland's (Stone Temple Pilots) and Chris Robinson's (the Black Crowes).

Asked to expound on the themes of his new albums, Justin Nathanielson writes, “The message is about everyday livelihood occurrences, getting to know someone and/or experiences whether it's relationships, good, mediocre, personal or bad.”

Currently residing in Georgia's Milledgeville/Sparta area, vocalist Justin Nathanielson is also multi-instrumentalist and professional musician playing rhythm and lead guitar, auto-harp, keyboards, piano, bass guitar, drum programming and percussion. A veteran of the armed forces, he is also a veteran of many bands over the years. While he mainly operates now as a solo act, he has said of himself that he has “always been committed to maintain optimism and a collaborative chemistry, just as other musicians should.”

He has written and recorded music in many genres, often blending two or more, including grunge rock, blues rock, spirituals, alternative, trip hop, electronica, Latin, reggae, East Indian, Native American, and country.

“Archive Box EP” and “Jus' Brown Songs” by Justin Nathanielson are available online at over 700 digital music stores worldwide beginning 23 September 2016.

Melodic hard-rock band Z-Sides release debut LP 'Via Negativa'

The melodic hard-rock group known as Z-Sides have released their debut LP record, “Via Negativa.” The album contains no fewer than 12 original tracks for an approximate total listening time of a full hour, making “Via Negativa” a comprehensive Z-Sides experience. It has been proudly published an an independent release outside the financial and managerial influence of the corporate music industry. Charging, soaring, pounding and at times even beautiful, “Via Negativa” from Z-Sides is clearly one of the most intriguing rock releases of 2015.

Z-Sides are a collection of music aficionados from Redwood City, CA. “We come from different backgrounds and different interests,” the band writes. “All of us have been playing since childhood, but our band has only been in existence since 2013.”

They cite as main artistic influences the Clash, Rush, Queens of The Stone Age, Yo La Tengo, Chavez, U2, REM, the Beatles, and Pink Floyd. Their own sound contains audible qualities similar to each of these (some more than others) but the result is a unique blend that cannot be called derivative. In fact, their overall effect is perhaps most reminiscent of the wildly creative, original independent labels like Dischord Records, Revelation Records and New Age Records in the late '90s and early 2000s.

Music on “Via Negativa” is aggressive without sounding macho, evocative without feeling melodramatic, violent without being destructive. Vocals and lyrics form an integral part of their songs but never become the focus of the music at the expense of instrumentation.

Asked to comment on the themes of their debut album, Z-Sides write that their record is “Exploring difficult emotions honestly and with a sense of criticism that is as searing on the self as it is on society or anyone else. We seek to express the depth of true heartache, the elation of true joy and the chaotic beauty of living life.”

The band goes on to note that “the music on this album was written collaboratively and reflects a range of influences larger than any one member of the band.”

As of the time of this writing, ArtoftheMix.org reports “Via Negativa” entering the alternative music charts at #3, a startling accomplishment for any record less than 12 hours into its first day on the market. The title of the record itself translates from Latin to 'by way of negation.'

Z-Sides have publicly stated that their second full-length record is already underway, implying that music fans have a real rock dynamo on their hands in this arresting group of musicians from California's Bay Area.

Rock band Shinaway releases new LP 'Love Hate'

Indie rock band from Cheltenham, UK Shinaway have released their anxiously awaited LP album, “Love Hate.” The full-length album has been proudly published on the Slaughter Records independent record label. Containing nine original tracks for an approximate total listening time of half an hour, “Love Hate” is an arresting example of brilliant songwriting and expert musicianship fans of all genres will appreciate.

At the heart of Shinaway are an uncle-and-nephew duo known as Dodders and Westwood. Asked to cite their main artistic influences, they write, “Very eclectic: the Stone Roses, the Stranglers, Sam Cooke – endless.”

Qualities similar to the above appear in Shinaway's “Love Hate” LP.

The overall composition of “Love Hate” recalls those patient rock ballads from Stone Roses, albeit in a more modern tone. Shinaway embrace a lo-fi mentality in their studio production, too, preferring to lay down a few excellently performed tracks rather than bury songs in wall-of-sound overdubs. Music by the Stranglers has the same underlying minimalism. Shinaway's penchant for penning memorable and socially relevant lyrics is akin to the artistic principles of Sam Cooke, who often attributed his success to “the art of observation” during the Civil Rights movement.

Speaking of their own themes on “Love Hate,” Shinaway write, “We wished to write songs about real issues from what's happening in the news to the very personal challenges that people can face, from mental illness and assault to broader issues such as people displacement. While the subject matter of some of the songs is a little dark, we wanted to create tunes with simple hooks to sing along to.”

The hooks are there, beyond doubt, making “Love Hate” an album which fans of pop will absolutely enjoy. However, to call the LP 'pop music' would diminish the lyrical clout of the album. Subjects like the cruelty of humankind (“Head in the Sand”) are dealt with in a straightforward and touching manner that somehow neither darkens nor depresses. These are balanced with less weighty songs like “Wrapped Around Her.”

Additionally, Shinaway have released an official music video for “Wrapped Around Her” available for viewing from their website [link provided below].

All in all, fans of alt-rock around the world have a surprise treat in “Love Hate” by England's Shinaway. The LP stands as a shining sign that the true spirit and sensibilities of the original indie-rock sound hasn't just survived – it's continuing to grow and to flourish in colorful and evocative ways.

The trio of music artists known as La Machine De Rêve have released their latest single and official video, “Steam Train.” The track is a sultry, shadowy pop song with elements of downtempo, electronica and art rock which will appeal to fans of a great many music genres. It has been published as an independent release outside the influence of the corporate music industry. Elegant, beautiful, entrancing and gracefully dark, “Steam Train” is clear evidence that La Machine De Rêve has great things in store for audiophiles everywhere.

La Machine De Rêve (French for “The Dream Machine”) cite as main artistic influences Zero 7, The xx, Sia, and M83. Elements of all four are to be found in “Steam Train,” ensuring that fans of such groups are certain to be likewise enthusiastic about their sparkling new single. Similarly, listeners who enjoy music by Portishead, Goldfrapp and Massive Attack are sure to find what they're looking for in music by La Machine De Rêve.

That the trio has penned and produced such a remarkably accessible and enthralling single isn't surprising considering their pedigree. La Machine De Rêve are singer Donna De Lory, music guru and producer Anthony J. Resta, and filmmaker and guitarist Greg Ansin. A short recounting of their myriad accolades follows.

De Lory has performed and/or recorded with Carly Simon, Ray Parker, Jr., Kim Carnes, Santana, Martika, Laura Branigan, Belinda Carlisle, Selena, Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Mylène Farmer, Alisha and Madonna. She sang as Madonna's backing vocalist and dancer for every concert from the “Who's That Girl” Tour in 1987 to the “Confessions Tour” in 2006. She last appeared onstage with the original Queen of Pop in 2007.

Drummer, guitarist and programmer Anthony J. Resta has earned twelve RIAA-certified gold and multi-platinum awards, and has been featured in many articles for his innovative recording techniques.
Resta has recorded, produced, mixed, remixed, co-written with or created soundscapes for clients including: Duran Duran (thirty songs including remixes – one platinum, one gold) Collective Soul (one platinum and two gold) Shawn Mullins (one platinum and one gold) Sir Elton John, Perry Ferrell, Megadeth, Sarah Mclaughlin/DMC, Blondie, and a great many others. Resta received his 12th RIAA Gold and Platinum certification for his programming and production work on the soundtracks of the wildly successful “Twilight” films.

Guitarist Greg Ansin is a noted filmmaker and animator. His films include “Infinite Santa 8000,” “Drive-In Horrorshow,” and a documentary on aging called “Growing Old.” The evocative imagery of the official “Steam Train” video makes it clear that Ansin's film artistry is as much a part of La Machine De Rêve as is his dreamlike guitar work.

Asked to describe the underlying theme of their music, La Machine De Rêve write that their aim is, “to make music that uplifts the mind, body and soul by using the best of the past, present and future.”

The Invisible Machine releases debut self-titled record 'The Invisible Machine'

The alternative-rock project known as the Invisible Machine have released their debut self-titled LP album, “The Invisible Machine.” The album comprises ten original songs for an approximate total listening time of 45 minutes, making for a highly textured introduction to this eclectic and powerful alt-rock group in 2015. It has been proudly published as an independent release without the support of the corporate music industry. Driving, soaring, and viscerally evocative, “The Invisible Machine” by the Invisible Machine is a rock record that defines modern alternative rock in chords everyone can appreciate.

The Invisible Machine cite as main artistic influences such titanic groups as Pink Floyd, Queen, Live, and Muse. While these groups may not seem to have many similarities at first glance, on closer inspection their sound dovetails very intuitively, a common thread running through each of them that is very much like the sound and style of the Invisible Machine. Melodic, symphonic, and marked by both incredibly strong songwriting and consistently impressive performances, the “Invisible Machine” LP is a satisfying listen from start to finish.

At the heart of the Invisible Machine's music are lyrics which describe life, society, and the world as a whole. Asked to describe the overall themes of their first album, the Invisible Machine write:

“Modern society makes us assume roles that sometimes drive us away from our essence and individuality. We are seen as consumers, as workers, as means to an end, but our value as individuals is sometimes overlooked.

“In a city of millions a single person can somehow lose themselves and in order to reach success and security can give up their dreams and the things that made them different from everyone else. The Invisible Machine is that thing that takes humanity from us. The idea of invisibility is connected with how the origin of this process is difficult to put a finger on. This dehumanization is a part of our system, of the economic model, even the way we relate to each other nowadays. It's become a part of our modern culture.”

The mastermind of the Invisible Machine is Juan Luis Barletti, who wrote each of the album's songs and also produced the LP. Barletti says the songs on his new record explore the above scenario in terms of individuals.

“Most songs in the album describe characters struggling with this process and trying to find themselves in a place that seems to be taking something away from them,” he writes. “The last two songs question this system and ask whether we can stay true to our essence and defy this invisible machine.”

Italian band ilVolodiColin release debut EP 'ilVolodiColin'

The minstrels of alternative rock known as ilVolodiColin have released their highly anticipated debut EP album, “ilVolodiColin.” Full of groove, verve and powerfully evocative songwriting, “ilVolodiColin” is easily the most intriguing alt-rock album to come from Italy in recent memory. [Official date of this publication, edited by the independent record label Music Room 05, is 31 May 2015.]

IlVolodiColin's new EP contains five original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 20 minutes, making the EP the definitive ilVolodiColin collection to date. Widely varied yet consistent in terms of character, “ilVolodiColin” makes for a remarkably perfect introduction to this European alt-rock crew for fans of rock music in general around the globe.

ilVolodiColin cite as main artistic influences a broad selection of genius. These include, in the band's own words: “Blues godfathers, Hendrix, the Beatles, the Doors, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Area, PFM, Battisti, Mina, Mogol, Tenco, Buscaglione, De Andrè… In other words rock, prog-rock and psychedelic-rock masters and some of the most poetical Italian authors and performers.”

Close readers will note the absence of the fundamental alt-rock players of the 1990s in this list, but the fact is that ilVolodiColin would have fit in nicely during that decade. Their sound recalls elements of Urge Overkill and Soul Asylum, having fat, juicy bass lines and an emphasis on creative chord progressions. Still, it is their deep prog-rock roots which often win out, such as in songs like “Dammi Qualche Idea” (“Give Me Some Ideas”) the album's closing selection.

Also integral to the ilVolodiColin sound is a careful attention to lyric poetry and transcendental thought, a hint of which may be gleaned from their song titles.

Speaking of the themes of their debut EP, ilVolodiColin say:

“Our EP, which is also our first release, is based on the idea of a rebirth, a spiritual rebirth into a new realm which is intimate and extended – infinite. It's not an escape from reality, but the reaching of a more conscious state of mind where material limits and inhibitions do not exist. It's a shamanic journey, a purification, a gift you can take with you when you're back to this world. We'd like that our songs could share with others the catharsis we feel while we play.”

Being proudly published on the Music Room 05 indie label, ilVolodiColin share many of the same principles. On at least one official website, Music Room 05 has been described online as promoting “mainly Italian music songwriting and related productions, with the goal to attract again the public’s attention towards genuine and original artistic expressions, closer to our ethnic culture and of more immediate and articulated perception both of the lyrical and the poetical aspects, not disregarding at the same time any wise experimentation with the international and the avant-garde resources.

“The spirit from which it rises is relentless, unleashed and anti-crisis. Our vision is wide-open, constant and positive!”

The mission statement closes with a quote from Thucydides, who notably said, “Who dares, wins.”

IlVolodiColin's self-titled debut EP is available online worldwide beginning 31 May 2015. Alt-rock fans should definitely get in early.
