Digital music artist DeepWise releases eight song LP album “A Way Out”

Salt Lake City digital musician DeepWise has released his latest LP record “A Way Out”

Salt Lake City digital musician DeepWise has released his latest LP record “A Way Out.” The album is eight tracks long comprising 47 minutes of solid play time. The music is expertly composed, incorporating various digital media sources as well as live rapping and keyboard instrumentation by DeepWise himself. Tracks are often upbeat, sometimes deep in the groove, always extremely melodic and lying somewhere between deep house dance club material and turn of the millennium techno.

DeepWise, although still a relatively new name on the scene, has deservedly garnered more attention than most enterprising digital musicians at this stage of their artistic career. His 2009 track “Another Wavelength” was ranked at number nine on InternetDJ.com's weekly charts. His songs have reached approximately 44,000 streams and 1,000 downloads. His releases typically place within the top 20 upon publication to the InternetDJ website.

He is a trained pianist (not surprising, as he is also the son of a jazz piano player and a music scholar, respectively) and his skills are present on the record, but the most remarkable ability DeepWise flaunts on “A Way Out” is his adept linguistic maneuvering as a writer and rapper. His themes are intellectually stimulating and socially important, as well as movingly personal and often extremely uplifting.

In the whimsical introduction to the album DeepWise cleverly quips “How can you keep it real when your mind is fake?” Much of the material is geared towards finding one's own meaning in life. Over the staccato of beats and crystalline whirring of his melodies he states, “I got a compass but I still don't know my direction.” His alarm clock goes off. He wakes up and yawns, then says, “Oh yeah! This is how it's supposed to start,” followed by the first proper track of the album.

“Follow your dream and you will survive...Because it is your destiny; this is the way it has to be,” he writes in “Fear of Destiny.” From the title track, “A Way Out,” come these rapid-fire lines: “Everyone's had a dream where everything is pretend, but I am your friend; my mind is zen and time starts to bend, but I use my pen.” His background in transposing video game soundtracks as a very young man is delightfully showcased in the melody of the closing track of the record, “No Regrets.”

“This album was made to inspire others to get out of whatever rut they may be in,” says DeepWise. “Lately, I’ve found creativity in times when I need to just 'get up.' I also wish to encourage critical thinking and well-informed opinions. This album in particular emphasizes a path we should search for in our lives, through which we may find purpose and rise beyond our perceived limitations, breaking through the psychological barriers we impose on ourselves and others, and ultimately escaping the mediocre daily routines we put up with that further oppress and discourage us from following through with certain goals we have.”
Or, in short: “It’s about finding a way out of your current nightmare, pressing on, and transforming; It’s time to be the person you always wanted to be.”
DeepWise's LP “A Way Out” is available everywhere online beginning December 29, 2012.

Comedy artists Bruce Cropley and Alan Morris release new satirical single “The Twelve Calls to PhoneCorp”

Comedy artists Bruce Cropley and Alan Morris have released their new satire “The Twelve Calls to PhoneCorp

Comedy artists Bruce Cropley and Alan Morris have released their new satire “The Twelve Calls to PhoneCorp.” The single is an audio comedy play in the tradition of the best radio shows and is structured around the popular Christmas traditional, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” It has a running time of approximately eight and a half hilarious minutes, all of which are entirely utilized, packed with more gags and one-liners than one might think possible in such a short span of time. This is the second collaboration between Cropley and Morris, who are from Australia and the Netherlands, respectively, and both of whom are accomplished musicians in addition to their other talents.

The satirical play tells a story to which anyone with a telephone can relate: the attempt to conduct simple, straightforward business through an automated telephone system that seems to serve no other purpose than to divert the communications of a company's clientele. The pathetic protagonist, wonderfully (and ridiculously) played by Alan Morris, wants merely to pay his phone bill. Naturally, this basic desire is parried by PhoneCorp's digital operator, whose lines are narrated by the infuriatingly soft-toned female voice of Macintosh OSX's “Vicki.” Insanity ensues, becoming exponentially more bizarre and surreal with each of the twelve calls.

It would not do to represent here much of the well-penned and well-performed humor, but it may be related without ruining any of the listener's fun that the first call to PhoneCorp results in the all-too-believable: “The system is currently down,” which is later followed by, “We are upgrading, please call again.”

By the sixth ring, there is apparently fish bait involved, as well as the brainwashing of children. High points include (but are in no way limited to) phone sex with camels, “suicide support,” and of course, the frustrations of humanity's worst invention since global thermonuclear war, digital voice recognition.

The fantastic piece of audio satire is available everywhere online beginning December 29 of 2012.

French artist Dj Pad releases new album “Waiting to be Discovered”

French DJ artist, Dj Pad has released new album “Waiting to be Discovered

French artist Dj Pad has released his newest long playing album, “Waiting to Be Discovered.” The record is extremely creative and unique, drawing from the widely varied techno and digital music genre in surprisingly different ways. Dj Pad opens up his record with sounds not unlike Moby's, but quickly moves into unlikely, less mainstream areas such as eighties synth disco (see “Bleed Electric,” track four) and post-trance/psytrance (“Back to School” track eleven). Several touches of dubstep are present, as well as some wholly dubstep tracks, but the album has only one overarching tone and style – Dj Pad's own – and he is as comfortable composing an old school early nineties deep house track as he is a 2012 dubstep epic.

In addition to the record's versatility, it is also unusually enormous for a single release: “Waiting to be Discovered” is over an hour and a half long, though Dj Pad suggests that this could easily be enlarged to encompass much, much more. “I spend many hours per day composing tracks,” he writes. “At the moment, I’ve produced almost 35 hours of music.” Unsurprisingly, this remarkable collection of compositions shows a healthy use of differentiation. “I’ve slowly begun to producing some experimental tracks, and also to focus on more mainstream genres,” writes Dj Pad. “I’ve released five albums that are freely available, but now I’m thinking of going to the next level, although making money is not really the point.” The album title, therefore, is not allegorical: “I mostly want to increase my visibility.”

As influences Dj Pad names the artists Hallucinogen, ATB, Cosmic Gate, Angerfist, Afrojack, Sebastian, Hanz Zimmer, and Mike Oldfield, a list which stretches decades back and also into the contemporary releases category, which explains how Pad has become so elastic in his skills as a song smith. Another hint of this has to do with Pad's own background as a musician. “I’ve started making electronic music simply by curiosity, though I really started playing music much younger; I've been playing accordion for 15 years.” This affinity with traditional instruments is perhaps how he has learned to leave space between his many layers of sound. Many modern digital artists simply throw track after track on top of one another, creating the same sort of mush that develops when too much of anything is mixed together.

“Waiting to be Discovered” is easily Dj Pad's best collection of tracks to-date, and is widely available online beginning December 28 of 2012.

Oscar Trevino III and Grupo Potestad release new LP “Madre Soltera”

Oscar Trevino III and his band, Grupo Potestad, have released their new LP album, “Madre Soltera.”

Oscar Trevino III and his band, Grupo Potestad, have released their new LP album, “Madre Soltera.” The record is published by Christian record company Reloj Christian Records and features ten truly excellent songs in widely varied styles. The title track, “Madre Soltera” (Single Mother), is the most contemporary to the ear, with Trevino's rich vocals pressed through the ever popular auto-tune effect – although unlike many modern artists, Trevino needs auto-tune like the sky needs blue.

“Ojala” (Hopefully) contrasts against this with a traditional Mexican southwestern sound that is rarely performed anywhere, anymore, and is absolutely marvelous to hear. “El Sembrador” (The Sower) is a celebration of rural life, one of the album's most carefree moments. “Pobrecito Yo” (Poor Baby) is a lively dance track, and “No Te Desemparare” (Never Leave Thee) is a love song of the highest quality. “Madre Soltera” is sure to prove one of Trevino and Grupo Potestad's finest records.

Of his background, Trevino writes, “I grew up around great musicians and songwriters that pioneered the regional Norteno Mexican sound.” That means an awful lot in this era of copies of copies of copies. Trevino is anything but a copy, however. He writes about the journey that led him to his authentic sound: “I grew up in that small town you see in the movies, the one with the blinking light near the railroad tracks, and the two-lane highway that runs for miles. Growing up, I was influenced by all kinds of music, from motown [such as] the Jackson 5, to Vicente Fernandez and Tony Sauceda. Around town I heard the sounds of Merle Haggard and Randy Travis playing from juke boxes in the mom-and-pop cafes.”
It was country music that inspired Trevino to write his songs as stories, but it was Spanish music that helped him to stay true to his roots, to his culture. In addition, Trevino writes that it was motown that helped him learn personal freedom: “[It was] the motown sound and what I learned about the history of motown that inspired me to start my own independent label, to always think outside the box about how I created my music, and with what freedom I managed my art.”
“Madre Soltera” is not without a message to its listeners, either. “Each song takes you through a different life experience,” writes Trevino. “The album as a whole entices you to not give up, that things are never as bad as they look. Reach into the deepest part of you and your faith and find the greatness in you.”
“All-in-all God has been good to me,” he writes. “He has allowed me to accomplish my dreams, but I feel the best is yet to come. I hope that those that listen to my songs are inspired, that their outlook on life is changed, and that somehow I changed their lives for the better through music, the universal language.”

Chicago hip hop artist JayDoubL releases new single “Naked”

Chicago based hip hop artist JayDoubL has released his newest single, “Naked,” featuring Shawnna Guy.
Chicago based hip hop artist JayDoubL has released his newest single, “Naked,” featuring Shawnna Guy. The instant urban classic is a heavy hitting, ultra modern drum and bass track with deep beats beneath widely varied instrumentation. Shawnna Guy and JayDoubL act out a romantic vignette in which the latter attempts to disrobe the former. The lyrics are well written with consistent snap and groove, and their diction is often amusing. For instance, Guy suggests herself as a potential Pam Anderson to JayDoubL's Tommy Lee at one point, as well as comparing her derriere to that of famous backside flaunter Kim Kardashian.

Of the single's hot and heavy background, JayDoubL writes, “The single has a girl and guy trading barbs about how the guy is trying to get her naked. It features Shawnna who is known for her sexually themed music content.”

JayDoubL himself is an artist of many different schools, having has his hands in the fashion, video, design and music industries. By day he is an operations executive who holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts, a masters in Integrated Marketing Communications, and is working towards his Doctorate in Business Administration. Born in Nigeria, he was raised in both Africa and the United States. He has termed his style of hip hop “hybrid music.” With his Hybrid Music, he seeks to “combine American, African and other cultures in sound and art with Afro, Hip Hop, and Dance music.”

JayDoubL lists Fela, Sunny Ade, Jay Z, Puffy Combs, and Bob Marley as his main influences.

“I have always had an ear for music, so I started producing,” he says.

JayDoubL has two previously released full length LP records, “#1” and “DoubLVisioN,” but this newest release shows him tacking in a slightly different direction. The single, “Naked,” is available everywhere online beginning December 28 of 2012.

Piano virtuoso Tyler Ray Johnson releases double LP album “Twenty Four Keys”

Tyler Ray Johnson, piano virtuoso extraordinaire, has released a double disc long playing record entitled “Twenty Four Keys"

Tyler Ray Johnson, piano virtuoso extraordinaire, has released a double disc long playing record entitled “Twenty Four Keys.” The album is a staggering feat by any estimation or standard, containing approximately seventy five minutes of playing time over twenty four tracks, each of which Johnson calls a key. By calling each of these compositions a 'key,' Johnson has contributed his work to a very long standing musical tradition: for hundreds of years composers have published their music in sets of twenty four numbered selections, one for each major and minor key of the scale (Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich are but a few composers who have done likewise).

The fact remains, however – and shockingly, stunningly so – that Tyler Ray Johnson has not “composed” these songs in the strictest sense. Each of the tracks on “Twenty Four Keys” is absolutely improvised. To be clear: these gorgeous inventions are short recordings of what the artist is capable of every time he sits at his instrument to play.

“I've been developing this style of improvisation lately,” writes Johnson. “The style is mixed with new age harmonies and rhythms that make the listener feel like they're going somewhere.”

And go somewhere the listener does. His notes trill upward and trickle downward, spiral and tipple and occasionally soar, although for the most part, this set of recorded performances is well-suited for a calming atmosphere.

“This is an easy listening album,” says Johnson. “This album is a new aspect of music for me in the sense that it's all improvised, but I still consider these compositions.”

Johnson has been playing since the age of eight and has studied various schools of music theory in Paris, Los Angeles, and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music respectively. He has won numerous awards and accolades and performed live with many legendary artists around the world. He has since left off schoolwork in order to develop himself as a soloist.

The music fan can do no better for an introduction to this magnificent artisan than “Twenty Four Keys.” It will certainly not and by no means be the last release we hear from Tyler Ray Johnson.

Insane Lyrical Assassins release first LP “Set It Off”

The Insane Lyrical Assassins have released their first full-length record, “Set It Off,” to massive underground acclaim

The Insane Lyrical Assassins have released their first full length record, “Set It Off,” to massive underground acclaim. Although this is the first long playing album from the Insane Lyrical Assassins, ILA rapper and lyricist Caps released his solo LP “Da Come Up” in 2008. “Set It Off” is a thirteen track record comprising over half an hour of all original songs written by the Insane Lyrical Assassins themselves, Caps, Risk, and Gumby. Also appearing on the album is young female vocalist Shorty, little sister of siblings Caps and Risk.

The overall sound of “Set It Off” is extremely unique and promises to set the pace for future Insane Lyrical Assassins releases. Within moments of hitting “play” the listener will note that ILA does not attempt to emulate other pop rap groups, but rather revels in their own talent and inimitable character. Their sound is unlike anyone in the urban underground scene today, and they love to play with various tones, voices and rhythms from track to track. Beats are mostly inspired by the contemporary gangsta sound, and melody lines take a back seat to lyrical poetry, on which the Insane Lyrical Assassins have obviously spent much time.

In fact, if one trait were to stand out besides the Insane Lyrical Assassins' remarkable style, it would be that of their lyrical quality. ILA makes a personal mission to use their expansive vocabularies in their music, which lofty and admirable goal puts them in an elite and extremely small crew of rap artists who have been known for caring about rap as an intellectual art form, such as “The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy,” “Pop Will Eat Itself,” and Tupac Shakur.

“We really like hip hop music,” writes the ILA, “especially when it comes to lyrics, but once the genre started to begin getting watered down we knew someone had to bring it back!”

With any luck, the ILA will have many opportunities to do so. “Set It Off” is released online everywhere on Christmas Day of 2012.

Amanda Lynette McKenna releases fairy story and activities for children “Sundew the Flower Faerie”

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released “Sundew the Flower Faerie,” her fairy story and set of activities for children
Amanda Lynette McKenna has released “Sundew the Flower Faerie,” for children. “Sundew the Flower Faerie” centers around a faerie story, not to be confused with the common fairy tale; McKenna's stories represent her own contribution to the traditional Celtic lore of her heritage. The “Sundew...” album also includes a set of nature activities and a theme song. It is the first installment of McKenna's ”The Land of Elvindore” series. “Sundew the Flower Faerie” is being concurrently released alongside another of her “...Elvindore” titles, the children's music LP album, “Singing with the Faeries.” “Sundew the Flower Faerie” runs for a total of 30 minutes, combining 12 minutes of storytelling with 18 minutes of activities.

The importance of storytelling has been emphasized by early childhood development professionals for centuries. “Sundew...” author Amanda Lynette McKenna reminds that bedtime stories can be a source of calming encouragement to children. “Bedtime is a great time to use a soothing voice to relax a child and give him or her a feeling of being safe,” she writes. She also reminds parents that it will not do to stop the story from being told should a child nod off. “When listening to my story CD,” writes McKenna, “it is important that your child hears the full story even if he or she has fallen asleep.” Her reason stems from simple, sensible psychology: “The unconscious mind needs to hear a happy resolution.”

McKenna's “Sundew the Flower Faerie” also contains plenty of nature-conscious morals, an important and often overlooked part of youth education. These healthy lessons include the “Earth Ways Pledge,” which sounds like this: “A pledge comes from the heart. Place your hands over your heart, and say after me: I will watch out for all creatures – especially the creatures closest to me. I will be careful with plants – especially the plants closest to me. I will tread gently upon the earth – especially the earth closest to me.”

The theme song which runs through Sundew’s story is called “Harmony We Bring.” McKenna says of the message that “Sundew the Flower Faerie” brings to children, “Through singing and dancing, we can bring harmony in our lives and the lives that surround us.” The “Sundew...” CD concludes with the value, “Be gentle with nature,” and also the task: “It’s never too late to do the right thing.”

Some of the 'Sundew...' activities and songs can be used for fairy parties,” McKenna writes, and parties there are sure to be, but all a child needs for a celebration of nature tonight is a telling of “Sundew the Flower Faerie” at bedtime. And remember, don't keep from them the happy ending!

Amanda Lynette McKenna releases fairy music collection for children “Singing with the Faeries”

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released her collection of fairy music for children, “Singing with the Faeries.”

Amanda Lynette McKenna has released her collection of fairy music for children “Singing with the Faeries.” The album is intended for ages three through ten and is part of her “Land of Elvindore” series. “Singing with the Faeries” includes eight themes from “The Land of Elvindore.” Each song is full of whimsical beauty, energy, and fun, and provides children with an extremely imaginative environment in which to exuberantly celebrate and develop their own creativity. “Singing with the Faeries” contains fourteen tracks and comprises thirty minutes of playing time.

“I find all children live to sing and dance,” says McKenna, “which is a wonderful way to keep them happy. Fairy parties are a fun way to sing and dance using my fairy song CD.”

Creativity and fun are not McKenna's only reasons for making her fairy music available for children, however. “I want children to have joyful hearts and loads of self esteem,” she says. “They can also develop social values and a love of nature through my fairy songs. They’ll have heaps of fun jumping up and following the actions to the songs, and using their vivid imaginations to become one of their favourite fairy characters.”

“Singing with the Faeries” contains widely various music, ranging from moderately paced waltzes to spritely jigs. Some of the songs are intended for dancing and listening only, but many are written with the intent that young listeners should actively take part, singing along with the song or following actions expressed by the singer.

In addition to providing creative, imaginative music, McKenna is also interested in preserving the lore of the Celts through her stories and music. “I like to write faeries the old Celtic way” she says, “because my ancestry is Celtic. Plus, the Celts strongly believed in the power of nature. The faerie stories, songs and activities are helping me with my goal of connecting as many children as I can back to nature.”

For parents wanting well-rounded, active and imaginative children with a healthy respect for nature, “Singing with the Faeries” by Amanda Lynette McKenna seems an indispensable step.

Bramble and Coghlan release Christmas 2012 single “The Xmas Song (Remember Why It's Christmas)”

UK rockers Ian Bramble and John Coghlan have released their 2012 Christmas single, “The Xmas Song (Remember Why It's Christmas).”
UK rockers Ian Bramble and John Coghlan have released their 2012 Christmas single, “The Xmas Song (Remember Why It's Christmas).” The song is a rollicking rock tribute to the joy and meaning of the Christmas holiday. “The Xmas Song” boasts cheerful folk overtones and a jumping, vivacious rock 'n' roll delivery. It also presages several important occurances in the Bramble and Coghlan timeline, including the up and coming release of Bramble and Coghlan's full length album (release date pending), and Coghlan's reforming of The Frantic Four (the original name of popular UK rock band, Status Quo) in March of 2013. “The Xmas Song” is a hand-clapping, foot-tapping seasonal that no fan of Christmas music, nor of the classic rock sound should miss this year.

Bramble's raw singing style is a cross between the delightful British drawl of John Lennon and the warbling rockabilly tone of Roy Orbison. His famous acoustic guitar work is as rhythmic and driving as fans have come to expect from him, and Coghlin’s drums are tighter than an anchor chain. Coghlan’s drumming style, too, is entirely stripped of all pretention – he drives the band on a two-piece kit: nothing more than a kick drum and a snare drum, with just a hihat and ride for cymbals. Dave Allan of The Popes plays a lively fiddle (two of them in their YouTube video, in fact) for which fiddling he is likewise famous. Also joining Bramble for this season’s single are Richard “Machine Gun” Hoy of The Banned (the name of Ian Bramble’s usual crew) on electric guitar, Jeremy Carroll of Airiel and Leatherat respectively, on bass, and Nicky Bramble singing backup vocs.

Bramble and Coghlan do not often make seasonals, so this is a rare treat for UK folk rock fans. Of the message the song speaks to their fans, Bramble says, “We love to rock, and we love Christmas. All the love this Christmas time should last throughout the year.” It’s a simple lesson, and one that’s worth repeating – especially because Bramble and Coghlan’s “The Xmas Song) is far more fun than hearing “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree…” Again.

UK prog rock band Riversea releases debut album “Out of an Ancient World”

UK prog rock band Riversea has released their debut LP album “Out of an Ancient World”
image
UK prog rock band Riversea has released their debut LP album “Out of an Ancient World.” The album is a collection of the band's best material going back to their inception in 2006, but does not include their full catalog to date. Their largely progressive-rock tone is aetherial, a truly epic wall of sound that comes from far away and deep within, long ago and from the future, somehow. With carefully orchestrated live instrumentation blended seamlessly alongside gorgeous digital music, Riversea has composed a gigantic, titanic work of audible art that demands attention from all fans of great music.

The idea for Riversea,” writes Atkinson, “was first formed as a song writing collaboration between Brendan Eyre and myself. Brendan, a keyboard orientated songwriter, gave me a CD copy of his 2005 solo album, and I really liked what I heard.”

This collaboration grew into a partnership, but the two lived a considerable distance apart. Eyre sent Atkinson the instrumental portion of what would become the title track of “Out of an Ancient World,” their first record, on a digital CD. As a singer-songwriter writing on acoustic guitar, Atkinson wrote lyrics for the track, and added melodies and vocals in his studio at York. The song, which was incidentally their first, stands a mile high as the closing track of the album.

It was this closing title song, “Out of an Ancient World,” that originally began a period of CD and musical concept swapping between Atkinson and Eyre that has resulted in this, their debut record. The writing and overall production of the album has been no small task. “All the songs on the album were written this way over a period of almost five years,” Atkinson writes. Ironically, just as the first song they recorded seemed most fitting at the end of the record, Atkinson says, “the last song we wrote together towards the end of 2010 became the album opener: ‘In The Beginning…’”

Strictly speaking, Riversea is not only a duo, however. Over the years they have enlisted the aid of several extremely talented artists, or as Atkinson calls them: “some friends who also happened to be wonderful musicians.” These additions have helped to complete the Riversea sound that the listener experiences on “Out of an Ancient World.”

From the band Mostly Autumn, Riversea has garnered the talents of Bryan Josh, Liam Davison, and Olivia Sparnenn. The rest of their friends in arts come from a wide variety of groups: Paul Cusick, Adrian Jones (Nine Stones Close), Ashley Mulford (Mandalaband), Mark Rowen (Breathing Space), Adam Dawson (Stolen Earth), Dave Clements (Kings of Queen), Janine Atkinson Benn (The Dark Flowers), Louise Dawson (The Wigglers) and Alex Cromarty (Heather Findlay Band).

The work of Riversea has produced an epic progressive rock album that deserves recognition from every fan of epic, wall-of-sound music. Simply put, “Out of an Ancient World” is not to be missed.

Up and coming rap artist Asylum releases his flagship LP “Coalesce”

Texas born rap artist Asylum has released his newest LP record, “Coalesce.”
Texas born rap artist Asylum has released his newest LP record, “Coalesce.” The album contains fourteen tracks comprising just over forty minutes worth of excellent rhymes and rhythms. The style is generally dark and spacious, with lots of room for his poetry to sink in between the beats. The beats themselves are heavy hitting and always in a balanced, boxer's cadence (one, one-two, one-two-three, one...) never annoyingly rapid fire or clumsily getting in the way of his eloquent lines.

The aforementioned eloquence of Asylum can not be overstated. Where most rap artists begin with beatboxing or rap and learn a kind of offshoot of formal poetry from penning rap lyrics, Asylum began the other way around, growing into rap music from writing classical poetry. Of this he writes, “I believe the door to my music opened when I started writing poetry in high school to pass the time. After having a poem published with a 'shot in the dark' online submission, I realized I may have a knack for art in some way, but never transformed thought into further action. A friend later suggested I try rapping after I had shared a poem over the phone.”

It's a good thing he did. Asylum's flawless, natural rhythm and groove is overstepped only by his endless cleverness. Track four on “Coalesce” is titled, “Mic'd,” the music industry abbreviation for 'microphoned;' Asylum uses it as an acronym for Music Is Common Denominator. His themes often venture into the metaphysical, or even transcendental, as the album's title demonstrates ('coalesce' means to grow together or blend into one body).

Asylum himself writes of the album's message, “We are all one. We all share the same emotions: anticipation, joy, anger, fear, sadness, etc. I am portraying all of those feelings and personalities in one, just as we all can do if we let go and simply be.” Asylum even chose white for the album cover to represent the “Presence of all growing together.” Everything for him is an opportunity for symbolism.

The album opens with a simple quote spoken low and seriously: “The presence of All, looks like None at all.”

Come for the beats, stay for the intellectual refinement. Asylum's “Coalesce” is some of the most intriguing rap music the underground urban scene has witnessed in years.

Texan singer-songwriter Heidi Zettl releases newest single “Crazy”

Arlington born Heidi Zettl has released her newest single, “Crazy,” to broad acclaim.

Arlington born Heidi Zettl has released her newest single, “Crazy,” to broad acclaim. The track combines the complexity of classical composition with the radical overtones of modern rock 'n' roll to create a sound that is both intellectually intriguing and emotionally charged. The melodies are mostly carried by Zettl, herself, whose whirling vocals showcase an earnest rawness that contrasts perfectly against her delicate piano playing. Her style of singing is not unlike that of Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries, except that Zettl boasts a broader range than O'Riordan, perhaps, and is even more fearless at the writing table, where she never balks at including a particularly difficult measure, or an entirely unexpected chord progression. “Crazy” is a single full of power and beauty, two attributes that are increasingly difficult to find in today's polarized and ever more pigeonholed music industry.

The song tells a story of youth gone wild on a trip to New York City, which was inspired by real events in Zettl's own experience. “When I was in New York,” she writes, “I saw that the city never sleeps. It does seem to be in its own time zone. I thought of a girl at one of the all night clubs, dancing. She has no idea how she got there or even who she is with… Crazy!”

Though to be sure, there are rock elements in the composition, performance, and production of “Crazy,” at its heart is an artist with mostly classical music in her musical background. She writes of this, “I began at four years old learning classical music and music theory. My mom thought it would help me in math!”

Whether her math scores jumped a couple notches or not, the benefit to her music writing skill is plain to be seen. While “Crazy” can be described as pop rock, it is far more involved than the radio's typical top 40 fare, and should give veteran music listeners more than enough to chew on for a single. Heidi Zettl is a voice to watch out for, and her single, “Crazy,” is not one to be missed.

Haks Pheenom releases newest single, “New Styler (Rough and Ready)”

Haks Pheenom has released his newest single, “New Styler (Rough and Ready),” on the heels of his 2012 EP.

Haks Pheenom has released his newest single, “New Styler (Rough & Ready),” on the heels of his 2012 EP. The success of Haks' Pheenom's last record, the extended play release “Pheenom Strike 0.5,” has colored him with neither arrogance nor conceit. He sports the same healthy, happy-go-lucky attitude he did last fall, and with the accompanying swagger that is part and parcel of the Pheenom personality. “It’s not about just attempting to compete with the 'big shots' and fame,” he writes jocularly, “though I obviously wouldn't say no to pushing a few million units, ha ha!”

Haks' single, “New Styler (Rough and Ready)” contains a message to his fans. He writes of this that he wants listeners to do their best “To be open, and to not segregate. [I want my fans to] be brash and confident in a pleasant way, to reminisce and laugh, to relax and have fun.” He reminds listeners that it's not just what a person does that's important, but precisely how and in what way they live that can make the difference. “Do it always with new style and on the ready,” he writes, alluding to the title of the track, itself. “Do it with new style, and on the ready for whatever.”

Pheenom is well known for writing meaningful lyrics. His rhymes do not at all reflect themes typical of lowbrow urban hip-hop, the usual hos, tricks and bling fare. “For me,” he writes, “it's about creating inspiring music with guidance. [I try to write music] that will invoke inspiration, happiness, a positive vibe.” But Haks is happy to admit that in the end, his music is written for the rhythm and groove of it all. “At a bare minimum,” he writes, “even if one is not a fan of the presented genre, [I want my listeners to] feel the need to tap their feet to the rhythm, or to a feeling.”

A great proponent of the power of belief, Haks Pheenom spends much of his time convincing listeners of their own potential. “My themes and style of music tend to revolve around self-confidence, the assurance that any ambition can be achievable,” he writes. “I find that music constructed with style and passion, thought and emotion can be a great conveyance and motivator for this kind of philosophy, as well as creating an inner warmth and enjoyment.”

If the listener has any doubt, one has only to note the resounding achievement that is “New Styler (Rough & Ready)” for proof. Haks Pheenom is on his way to joining some of the most talented artists in music fame worldwide. His single is released December, 2012.

The Sign of Leo releases single “Look Up at the Sky / Where Do We Go from Here?”

Netherlands indie band The Sign of Leo has released their newest single, Look Up at the Sky / Where Do We Go from Here?

Netherlands indie band The Sign of Leo has released their newest single,Look Up at the Sky / Where Do We Go from Here? The single is a twin release in the tradition of the 7” record, with “Look Up at the Sky” as a sort of digital Side-A, and having “Where Do We Go from Here” for a B-Side. The tracks are braided together by their themes, which have at their heart the end of the Mayan long-count calendar as a basis.

The sound of the single is mainly determined by The Sign of Leo’s unique style of writing and composition. Their songs are integrally inspired by classic rock principles, while at the same time The Sign of Leo remains unafraid to incorporate modern elements into them, such as minor digital effects. The overall tone lies somewhere between The Beatles and Tears for Fears, albeit without the heavy reliance on a prominent use of rock and roll style percussion. They have written of themselves that “The music of The Sign of Leo is rooted in the history of pop music with influences from the ‘60s, ‘70s, and with faint echoes from the early ‘80s.” This self-description will seem entirely appropriate to first time hearers.

Regarding the meaning ofLook Up at the Sky / Where Do We Go from Here?,The Sign of Leo writes:‘Look up at the sky’ is a song about the 2012 prediction [of the unlikely end of the world] and especially the people who fervently believe in the fact that it will take place as such. Numerous websites are dedicated to this event and spreading the message. As one website states: the 2012 phenomenon spreads through the global consciousness, strengthened by a steady stream of internet articles, books, videos and films. Many people are getting anxious and fearful.” Regarding the relationship the former track has to the latter, they write, “‘Where do we go from here’ is related to ‘Look up in the sky’ because it raises the question of whether we, the human race, have had a hand in our own downfall (when it takes place). [We are after all] a human race that has exploited the earth ever since the beginning of time.”

The Sign of Leo cites a long, variegated and complex array of influences which includes The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Todd Rundgren, Traffic, The Doors, Moody Blues, Echo & The Bunnymen, Tears For Fears, and the always underrated British synthpop trio, Talk Talk.

I started in my youth playing in bands and writing my own material,” writes singer Martin Postema. “The Sign Of Leo was formed in 2011 in order to perform the songs I had written over a period from 2008 to 2010.”

That being the case, fans will be glad to know that there seem to be a good many more tracks where this single came from, and considering the fantastic quality of Look Up at the Sky / Where Do We Go from Here?,chances are that many of them will resonate through the indie music community for years to come.

So. Cal. singer Lena Fayre releases debut single “Belong to You”

Young pop singer Lena Fayre has released her breakout single “Belong to You.”

Young pop singer Lena Fayre has released her breakout single “Belong to You.” She is just sixteen years old, yet her clarion, crystalline voice bears the same beauty and precision that made Lauryn Hill famous at roughly the same age. The track is an original – a catchy, well-written original – but like the explosive fireworks display of a NASA rocket’s ignition and liftoff, this is only the beginning for Fayre. “‘Belong to You’ is the debut single from my upcoming EP,” she writes. “It’s scheduled for a spring release in 2013.” If the rest of her EP is half as spellbinding as this debut single, then music fans have something of great quality to look forward to in spring, something that may alter the general mood of pop music in the future.

“Belong to You” is written with plenty of angst and melancholy in the chord progression, but also with a heavy dose of triumphant defiance. It is somewhat reminiscent of Rihanna’s runaway hit, “Umbrella,” but with far more class and far less backbeat. There is a touch of digital effect on Fayre’s voice (just a touch), and the pop-style simplicity of the orchestration forces the listener to concede that the song is truly pop at its heart, though there seems at every moment to be something more refined about it, something decidedly upscale. There is the gorgeous, subtle violin work of Stevie Blacke, for instance, which forms a velvet curtain of sound behind Fayre’s singing. The lead instrumentation is formed by the masterfully measured keystrokes of Kosta Lois on piano. Michael Bradford’s bass guitar is unobtrusive, yet powerful.

For Fayre herself, at least, the song’s style represents a deliberate shift from the typical contemporary attitude of pop music. Of this she writes, “From the beginning, I did not want to do bland pop songs that go in one ear and out the other. Initially, I leaned the other way.” How far this experimentation stretched, listeners may be surprised to hear. “Some of my early songs were rock songs (inspired by bands like Paramore and Evanescence). Ultimately, I decided that I want to make music that is more mainstream and fun to enjoy with my friends. So, now I focus on creating pop music with my own stamp, which I call ‘a touch of urban edge.’”

The urban edge she speaks of is certainly present, yet no more obvious than a yin spot in a yang swirl. Overall, “Belong to You” is a composition of fantastic taste and musicianship, one no fan of pop music should miss.

Jara Harris releases flagship solo LP “Only”

Powerhouse prodigy of funk from So. Cal's Orange County, Jara Harris, has released his flagship solo LP, “Only”

Powerhouse prodigy of funk from So. Cal's Orange County, Jara Harris, has released his flagship solo LP, “Only.” The full-length record will appeal to fans of modern funkadelia such as the work of Prince, Outkast, or Lenny Kravitz, although Harris' “Only” also has strong undercurrents of rhythm 'n' blues, rock 'n' roll, hip-hop, jazz, and soul. The long-awaited album is an exceptional value as well, containing fifteen original tracks -- a whopping sixty-minutes' worth of excellent music played way down deep in the groove, performed, recorded, and engineered entirely by Harris, himself.

The overall tone of “Only” is described in the album's liner notes thus: “This sound is so visual that the best chance of getting it, is to paint it with other artists as the ingredients. So take Sly Stone, George Clinton, Prince, Bootsy Collins, Rage Against The Machine, Fishbone, Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park, Musiq Soulchild and throw it all into a blender... And it somehow came out structure and made total sense.”

Jara Harris does not usually produce solo records. His music career began at the age of four, playing percussion in his family band, the 4 Js. However, by sixteen Jara had begun producing his own solo music on a Teac Porta-One four-track recorder. All his writing and performances were original and held to his own strict standards of quality. This led to fronting his own modestly successful band, Jarasound, and afterwards to a job playing bass for the Jackson 5's Randy Jackson in a band called Randy and the Gypsies. Jara also played bass for Jose Feliciano's Grammy-Award winning album of 1990, "Cielito Lindo." Following this, Harris wanted greater breadth of creativity and started his second band, Slapbak. Slapbak would prove to be Harris' most personal project until this solo release of “Only.”

About the message his record tries to convey to his fans, Harris says, "This album talks about mistakes, having to live with the outcome of your actions even though you’ve changed. But it's also about reaching the end of your rope and realizing that, sometimes, you have to just walk away and start over."

Plain to see (and even more plainly heard), Jara Harris' "Only" isn't anywhere near the end of his rope, or of anything else but a long wait. Fans of funk rock can pick up this album from digital distributors everywhere.

Underground Balloon Service releases single “Out Past Wijgmaal”

UK alternative music pioneers The Underground Balloon Service are releasing their first single recorded in mainland Europe, “Out Past Wijgmaal.”

UK alternative music pioneers The Underground Balloon Service are releasing their first single recorded from Belgium, “Out Past Wijgmaal.” The track represents the re-founding of the Underground Balloon Service in mainland Europe and is the first from UBS since founder Ashley (Ash) Coupland's move in 2005. It serves as the launch point for a body of future releases that will include much of Underground Balloon Service's previously unknown back catalog, as well as new material recorded in their current studio in the old Flemish university town, Leuven.

“Out Past Wijgmaal” itself pulses with a warm spaciousness that is at once ambient and direct. It features up-front but unobtrusive clean-channel guitar melodies, and a ghostly vocal track that seems to come from everywhere, yet never sounds unclear. Coupland's singing is patient and carefully intoned, with all the quality of alternative-music favorite, Morrissey, but with none of the Smiths singer's ostentation. The lead guitar sounds much like the guitar work in the famous, and gorgeous, theme from the surf film, “The Endless Summer.” Crystalline and space-age effects form the delicate and dreamy background. The overall feeling is one of comfort, mystery, and quiet groove, like a relaxed version of The Beatles' far-out classic, “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

Officially founded in Hull in the United Kingdom, 1990, Coupland writes that The Underground Balloon Service is “a musical collective that has absorbed influences from the entirety of the musical spectrum.” They have performed with the likes of Radiohead and New Orleans' Dr. John, and have a copious collection of original material that stretches into the late eighties, previous to the actual formation of the band.

The creative and unlikely name of The Underground Balloon service comes from a fascinating discussion between band founder, Coupland and a WWII veteran named Peter, whom he was teaching about the Internet. In the war, Peter and his fellow soldiers worked with barrage balloons that defended against bombing raids. For entertainment at night they had a crystal radio. Being a rudimentary radio, however, it didn't receive well, so the men took copper wire from a mine detonator and strung it up on one of their balloons, instantly producing one of the world's highest and most sensitive radio receivers, capable of listening to transmissions from throughout the western hemisphere. They named it the Balloon Service. Upon learning that the Internet was based on modem technology that utilized copper telephone wires underground, Peter saw a parallel and suggested, “So it's the Underground Balloon Service, then.”

In releasing this flagship single, Ash Coupland writes, “The hope is that The Underground Balloon Service will finally see its strange name recognized as a creator of music in the alternative genre, and will continue to flourish for many years to come.”

With quality releases such as this, The Underground Balloon Service can feel secure their hopes will be realized in spades.
