George De Melo releases new single, “Sopa de Feijao”

The singer of Portuguese music known as George De Melo has released his newest LP album, titled, “Sopa de Feijao.” The album includes ten full tracks in De Melo's own, unmatched style and with his inimitable flair, for a grand total of 40 minutes' playing time. Joining him in this release are fellow performers Jorge Ferreira, Joe Malhoa, and Quim Barreiros.

The album is a collage of rock, country, and traditional Portugese music. De Melo's lyrics are sometimes sentimental, but often extremely lighthearted and amusing, sometimes positively comical. His singing is rich and natural, warm and excellent to hear. His tone is an unlikely mix of debonaire and devil-may-care, like a cross between the voices and attitudes of Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, although in Portuguese, of course.

Although he sings in his native tongue of Portuguese, George De Melo was not born on the mainland Iberian peninsula where Spain is located. Rather, he is a born national of the Azores volcanic archipelago that is located approximately 1,000 miles west of Lisbon, or about halfway between the United States and Europe in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a favorite place of theorists for the possible location of fabled Atlantis. In 1964 De Melo immigrated to Canada, where he played and sang for various bands. He began hosting karaoke full time in British Columbia around 1994, which gave him further exposure to the professional stage of music performance. His first full-length record, “Sope de Feijao,” was originally produced in 2011, but has only just now been officially published and distributed.

“I am passionate about music,” writes De Melo, “and having fun is one of my priorities in life.”

The album “Sope de Feijao,” by George De Melo, is available online worldwide beginning March 1, 2013.

MAFFEO releases new single “Shine”

The Lowell, MA acoustic rock band known as MAFFEO has released their latest single, titled, “Shine.” The track is the band's first official public introduction to their up-and-coming LP record and serves at the same time as an announcement to the music-listening world that they are not only ready for all the spotlight it has to put on them, but also for a long career of music making. At just under six minutes' playing time, “Shine” does these jobs well, and makes for an appropriate and round picture of MAFFEO's music to come.

The track itself is couched in the same grass-roots, American folk and blues music that inspired artists such as Kurt Cobain and Layne Staley. The mantric repetition of its main chord progression creates an aura that is powerful in its scowling determination, ominous, and yet triumphant in its overall tone.

Lead vocalist and guitarist Daniel "Maf" Maffeo is a master of soul-singing with an audible razor-sharpness in his attitude that manifests as the song's core mood, into which the rest of MAFFEO grows and likewise emphasizes. The vocals of Maria Chaves contrast against this in the feminine quality of her voice, but her direct, almost confrontational delivery (like Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane without the frills) pairs extremely well with the quasi-violent undertone of Maf's own, making her voice more a pairing to his than merely a backup or background accompaniment. They are also joined by Taylor “The Kid” Morehouse on cello, the sonorous quality of which carries “Shine”'s melody better than any traditional bass guitarist could accomplish. This combination rests on a gorgeous bed of warmly natural conga drumming and tambourine that gives MAFFEO an inimitable sound all their own.

The likeness of MAFFEO's sonic character to that of Layne Staley is in particular very appropriate, as MAFFEO lists Alice in Chains as one of their main influences. MAFFEO's sound is most like AIC's in the songwriting, much of which Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell themselves borrowed in kind from old blues musicians such as Lead Belly and Robert Johnson. To consider MAFFEO's sound in “Shine” derivative of AIC would therefore be a fatal mistake in music appreciation, except insofar as blues is itself cyclical and thereby self-derived in nature. The end result is that MAFFEO, like Staley and Cobain before them, are a gorgeous and formidable addition to the line of great artists in the shadowy-sounding tradition of American folk music, and the music fan of the modern day is much, much better off now that they've arrived.

“Shine” by MAFFEO is available online worldwide as of January 17, 2013.

Composer Joseph P. Freije releases new LP album “Phrygian Piano and Sound Spiral Part II”

The composer of “pure sound” known as Joseph P. Freije has released his newest LP record, titled, “Phrygian Piano and Sound Spiral Part II.” It is comprised of four original tracks in approximately 50 minutes playing time, making for a fairly comprehensive album, even for an LP. Its overall tone is extremely atmospheric, ambient, and pleasing to the ear, and can be played under any circumstances without seeming out of place or at odds. Freije's album is composed for the keyboard and utilizes effects that add alien, colorful textures without ever obstructing the natural voices of the piano. This having been said, Freije's “Phrygian Piano and Sound Spiral Part II” is a work of art that can not be described in terms typically appended to music, which is consistent with the musical philosophies of its composer.

Pure Sound,” writes Freije, “is a higher form of communication than words. Words attempt to (or do) divide, label and categorize humans into groups for exploitation.” Freije's music offers an alternative mode of communication, through which he teaches by example. “The potential for better things is unlimited,” he says, adding, “[but] so is the effort to control the potential of some who offer perspectives that would release that potential.”

Freije's perspective is one that deserves much attention, in fact, and not merely for his music. His music is a reflection of his strong intellect and personality, both of which have produced a remarkable personal history. He has traveled abroad, hitchhiked across the US on $60, completed over 160 scuba dives, run 20 miles in a little over two hours, written a markedly significant psychological study, been a motorcycle enthusiast, been a firearms expert, been married for 30 years, and designed his own home and private nature reserve. These things are not sufficient to paint a complete picture of Joseph Freije, composer, but they are a start.

It is perhaps best that the music fan listen to his record firsthand in order for a rounder image – particularly because the man, himself, is not the thing. “Phrygian Piano and Sound Spiral Part II” is a work of indescribable beauty and complexity that no listener ought to miss in lieu of the same old and tired verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-verse-chorus music album. There's certainly nothing wrong with the formula, but Freije is here to point out that it isn't all there is to music listening. His album stands as a suggestion: consider “Pure Sound.”

Phrygian Piano and Sound Spiral Part II” by Joseph P. Freije is available online worldwide beginning March 1, 2013.

Giuseppe Galante releases new single, “Canon in D for 2 Trumpets, Organ and Orchestra”

The trumpet virtuoso Giuseppe Galante has published his newest classical music single, the seminal work of undying tradition known as “Canon in D” by Johann Pachelbel, Galante's rendition being orchestrated particularly “for 2 Trumpets, Organ, and Orchestra.” This is the first official, public release by Galante since his masterful treatment of Johann Ernst Altenburg’s “Concerto for 7 Trumpets and Timpani, Movement 1 Allegro,” published in early-mid February of 2013.

Galante's “Canon...” differs in surprising ways from his delivery of Altenburg's concerto, and though each release proves beyond any doubt that Galante is one of the best trumpet players of classical music living today, the contrast in these performances shows that he is not only a man of great precision with his instrument, but also an artist of vast scope and versatility. His performance of Altenburg adds much life and verve to the piece (which is saying much – Altenburg's beautiful “Concerto for 7 Trumpets...” is a work of great control and restraint) but Galante's “Canon in D” is somewhat more lighthearted and full of joie de vivre. His version of “Canon...” downplays the marching cadence of the song, the hypnotizing rhythm of which is typically (and tragically) over-emphasized. He allows himself to blend the open and close of each individual note from his trumpet with the rest of the orchestra in a manner that almost seems impossible for a trumpet to do, creating an almost vocal effect from the instrument. In other words, rather than the blasting sound for which the trumpet is often stereotyped, Galante's trumpet actually sounds like it is singing.

Galante was first introduced to music through his father, Rosario, who played clarinet in the Italian Army. However, it was not until he won a Most-Improved Instrumentalist award in seventh grade that included an album by the legendary French trumpeter, Maurice Andre, that he became absolutely inspired to conquer the instrument. Galante has said that he considers Andre to be the greatest trumpeter in the history of brass, and that he represents the only real artistic influence on Galante himself.

Galante graduated from the Crane School of Music and was awarded accolades there, also, including his Performer’s Certificate in Trumpet for Superior Performance, as well as The Certificate of Merit for Superior Contributions. He was selected by the Crane School for their Concerto Program, where he was selected to perform Albinoni’s “Concerto in D-Minor” with the Crane Symphony. He was also honored with the chance to perform the first movement of Tartini’s “Trumpet Concerto” in concert and on tour with the Crane School’s Wind Ensemble.

Giuseppe Galante has performed with the Artpark Orchestra, the Gotham Brass Quintet, the Hutchinson River Chamber Players, and the Norwalk Symphony. Since 1989, he has been instructing the youth of today in music, and has stated clearly that this represents to him a most honorable profession. He has studied trumpet under Clarke Elliot, Dr. Manuel Alvarez, Sherman Lyke, Dr. Michael Tunnell, Everett McCurdy, Dr. John Ellis, David Kuehn, and Edward Treutel.

Giuseppe Galante’s “Canon in D for 2 Trumpets, Organ and Orchestra” by Pachelbel is available online everywhere beginning March 1, 2013.

Singer-songwriter Miguel Freiles releases newest LP album “Driven to My Dream”

Miguel Freiles, a singer and composer of electronic dance music, has released his latest flagship long-playing record album, “Driven to My Dream,” on the Riviera Beat Music record label. The album contains 15 original dance tracks for a full 55 minutes of listening time. “Driven...” is not a record that can easily be listened to without moving to its beat, however.

Freiles himself performs the vocals for the album in his own, inimitable style that is not too unlike the singing of Interpol's Paul Banks (see “Evil”). Nonetheless, his insanely infectious tone and natural singing voice, although startling at first in its originality, is in the end perhaps his music's most gorgeous quality. A song on the album without Freiles singing would be disappointing; it is good, therefore, that no such track exists on his record. Freiles is also the artist responsible for the extremely catchy arrangements of the electronic drums and percussion, as well as all synthesized accompaniment on the record.

Of the album's 15 tracks, three have remixes that follow immediately after them, being “Rock It Out,” “10,000 Miles” and the title track, “Driven to My Dream.” These remixes are entirely individual in their own right and sound wonderful coming up right after their main iterations, particularly in a dance hall situation, in which the music does not sound so much remixed as it does enlarged upon.

Concerning the message Freiles has for his listening public, he writes simply and in earnest, “Enjoy life. Dance and have fun. Anything is possible.” This last comment is certainly true for Freiles, himself, whose album is not so much a creative title as it is an assertion of his artistic ambitions, the same ambitions which are hereby realized in the high-quality collection of songs known as “Driven to My Dream.”

“Driven to My Dream” by Miguel Freiles is available online worldwide beginning March 1, 2013, on Riviera Beat Music.

Iwari releases newest single “This Is That R.E.A.L.”

The Los Angeles rap artist known as Iwari has released his latest single, “This Is That R.E.A.L.” The single is a heavy hitting urban anthem with contemporary themes, regarding which Iwari lays out his perspective on a variety of important topics. The sound is loaded with heavy bass and old-school synth sounds such as those popularized by earlier West Coast artists, like NWA and Snoop Doggy Dogg. Hip-hop fans looking for the same old, tired gangsta rap will not find it in Iwari's, “This Is That R.E.A.L.,” however. While his single retains the same direct, in-your-face honesty and attitude that has characterized the Los Angeles rap movement for decades, it eschews all shallow, meaningless posturing for socially conscientious, humanitarian, and philosophical poetry that asks as many important questions as it suggests simple and insightful answers.

Regarding the message his track conveys to the music-listening public, Iwari writes, “I want to use music to give my comment on today's culture and society. 'This Is That R.E.A.L.' is my gut reaction to 'Raw Experience that I Acquired Living.'”

Iwari's experience goes further than that of many young men in the modern world. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but lived much of his life in New York City before coming to Southern California, where he attended USC and played in the Trojans' celebrated marching band. He is an accomplished player of the piano, violin, and saxophone. He lists among his main influences the artists Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Tech Nine, and Busta Rhymes, but also remarks that the works of Michael Jackson and Ray Charles are extremely important to him. Still, his heart is mostly wrapped in rap.

“I want my listeners to hear what I think is being swept under the table,” he writes. “I want them to consider what no one talks about although they live it everyday, and to see what lessons we can take from life’s experiences just the way they come at you.”

“This Is That R.E.A.L.” by Iwari is the first official single from the upcoming LP album of the same name, and is available online worldwide beginning March 1, 2013.

Little Mountain Publications releases new LP “Artaban the Other Wiseman Narration/Piano/Vocals”

Utah-based Little Mountain Publications has released their epic debut musical, “Artaban the Other Wiseman Narration/Piano/Vocals,” this being the most comprehensive version. It is likely the best introduction to LMP's “Artaban...” series of albums, which also currently includes “Artaban the Other Wiseman Piano Accompaniment” and “Artaban the Other Wiseman Piano/Vocal.” Appropriately for the genre of musical theater, these LP records serve all the purposes necessary to enjoy the remarkable orchestration, lyricism, and inspirational story.

The music of “Artaban the Other Wiseman” is composed by Daniel Carter, while the accompanying narration is authored by Einer and Grace Bjarnson, and voiced by Jesse Bennett. It is based on the original 1896 story by Henry Van Dyke, “The Other Wiseman.”

The tale as told by Carter and the Bjarnsons revolves around a magus, Artaban, and his former friend turned nemesis, Rashne. Over 30 years Artaban seeks the Messiah and helps others along the way, but is repeatedly hindered by Rashne, each confrontation bringing the humble hero further insight into his spiritual journey, as well as a good deal of suffering to temper him. This iteration of “Artaban the Other Wiseman” makes a small departure from Van Dyke's original plot, in that the protagonist's celestial epiphany is plainly expressed, rather than implied, before the story's conclusion. Artaban learns that the deeper meaning of “seeking and finding” the Holy, Anointed One means that he has found and worshiped his King through the serving of others all throughout his quest. Says Artaban in the musical's apex and conclusion, “I have found my king. He is in my heart and in my eyes...”

Daniel Carter, an autodidact pianist, began composing at 16 in 1971. He graduated from BYU in musical composition, having already published a number songs. He owns his own publishing company and has well over 300 compositions to his credit. He co-authored a stage musical in his early 20s, "Can't Stand Still," that ran for a season at Robert Redford's Sundance Summer Theater. His music has been sung and recorded by the Tabernacle Choir, and hundreds of singing groups across the United States have been performing his music for decades.

Einer and Grace Bjarnson are a father-daughter stage and screen writing team who have collaborated with Daniel Carter for some 30 years in both performing his music, along with other members of the Bjarnson family. Their epic musical, “Artaban the Other Wiseman” has been in development for over ten years. In 2008, it was temporarily shelved to work on a smaller, more narrative-based, version of the play, which after three more years resulted in “Artaban the Other Wiseman Narration/Piano/Vocal.”

Little Mountain Publications has released this album (with the “Artaban...Performance Book) in order to introduce the story to the public, after which a libretto for the complete two-hour epic musical will be released with complete orchestration.

Alternative music artist Vaughty releases new single “Warm Inside”

The alternative music artist known as Vaughty has released his newest single track, “Warm Inside.” The song features an electrifying synth pop beat and tone that is reminiscent of the early nineties alternative music sound. This original, experimental music movement from the British underground once returned dancing to nightclubs and paved the road for digital music artists for decades to come, and Vaughty's “Warm Inside” has every excellent quality of those legendary tunes without any of their unfortunate side attributes. The song is passionate without being melodramatic, heavy hitting without being harsh, and sexy without being boringly obvious about it.

Vaughty lists as main artistic influences the likes of Depeche Mode, Vangelis, Vince Clarke, and Gary Numan, all of whom are apparent in “Warm Inside” in one form or another. This is especially true in the case of Depeche Mode, whose dark overtones contrasted so obliquely with the Jon Bon Jovis and Metallicas of 1991. This shadowy, romantic mood is very present in Vaughty's track, and he plays upon it with just the right balance of verve and groove in his keyboard playing, back beats, and aloof, masculine vocals. Also tempering the edginess of the song is the sweet, unpretentious singing voice of Jenny Palmer, whose natural timbre is nothing like the annoying divas who ruled the house music genre of the day, but rather is soft and elegant, making for a perfect dance hall number that is just as suited for night drives through the city as it is for flashing, thumping discotheques.

In fact, driving and the city are both large inspirations for the track. Vaughty writes of this, “The sound of the song, as well as the up-and-coming Vaughty EP, was inspired by the 2011 movie called “Drive” (starring Ryan Gosling). The music is all about city life, the neon views and the atmosphere of metropolitan night life. It's about the contrast between the cold, hard city and vulnerable human emotions.” Vaughty's single isn't necessarily a celebration of urban living, however, nor is it an homage. “'Warm Inside,'” he explains, “is a song about trying to keep the person you love safe in a dangerous world.”

That living in the city remains insanely dangerous cannot be helped. We don't have to suffer it without good music, though.

Vaughty's single “Warm Inside” is available worldwide beginning February 28, 2013.

Electronic Migration Panel releases new LP “Koffie”

The Australian solo music artist known as the Electronic Migration Panel has released his newest LP, titled, “Koffie.” The record is a highly experimental, neo-classical work of digital orchestration that far transcends modern terms of musical classification. It is at once an audible scene of an almost palpable, visible environment, and an ambient digital music album that is extremely enjoyable from beginning to end as traditional music listening. This full-length album is preceded by EMP's debut record, “Quell – Electric,” which was originally released in 2006 and re-issued in 2012.

The overall experience of EMP is impossible to describe appropriately as an objective hearer. The task is almost certainly best accomplished by the Migration Panel itself, thus: “Electronic Migration Panel’s music is a swirling, interconnected universe of electronic themes, noise, and soundscapes. The music is produced on a variety of analogue synthesizers, piano, treated drum machines, electro-acoustics and found sound.”

The Electronic Migration Panel is a self-funded, self-produced and self-realised vessel for the solo projects of Perth-based composer, Wheldon Thornley. Thornley is also known for his work as the keyboard player, ethereal beats programmer and producer from the multimedia collective, Masonik, with whom he has been collaborating for over four years (for more details visit www.masonik.org).

Thornley originally studied classical music, but moved to writing and performing progressive rock in the early 1990s. He lists as main inspirations such genius acts as Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Harold Budd, Boards of Canada, Can, Future Sound of London, The Orb, Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and Susumu Yokoto. This eclectic blend of electronica, modern rock, techno, and experimental classic rock shows very well how the swirl of sound that is the “Electronic Migration Panel” has come to be, and influences from these various acts (as well as myriad others) are easily discerned therein.

In short, “Koffie” by the Electronic Migration Panel represents the most creative music project to come out of an independent source in perhaps many years, and absolutely deserves all the attention an audiophile would give to such well-deserving projects.

“Koffie” is available online worldwide beginning February 28, 2013.

London virtuoso guitarist Max Dolan releases new EP “Lilac Moonrise”

English singer-songwriter and master guitarist Max Dolan has released his latest EP, titled, “Lilac Moonrise,” on the Isis Music Group label. The record is comprised of seven original tracks in approximately 22 minutes of listening play. It is the most recent official collection of studio music from Dolan to date, and promises to be the harbinger of many full-length records to come.

“Lilac Moonrise” has an ethereal quality in terms of orchestration and tone that is reminiscent of some of the most fantastic and unique post-modern experimentalists from the late sixties and early seventies, such as Lou Reed's infamously eclectic band, The Velvet Underground. The sound also utilizes an ambient, spacious atmosphere such as Echo and the Bunnymen were known for, as well as the lesser-known Mission UK. These comparisons do not do justice, however, to the overarching classic rock element of “Lilac...,” which also brings to mind experimental classic-rock bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, and others. The record, in fact, is unique in many ways that resist general categorization.

Dolan was born in 1985 in Jersey, United Kingdom. He is known for a flashy stage performance that is the result of much obvious skill and time spent honing his inherent talent. This can include such classic stage magics as playing behind his head or with his teeth, such performance flair being more than somewhat rare to the stage today. He began his professional career as a session musician for the Jimi Hendrix Experience on the “Experience Sessions” album. His infamous arctic-white, Gibson SG Special Limited guitar he has dubbed, “Penelope, the Gypsy princess.” 2011 saw the beginning of his chemistry-charged collaboration with percussionist Kofi Baker (son of Cream drummer, Ginger Baker).

When asked about the themes of his music, Dolan says only, “What I try and do with my music is to take people somewhere beautiful, in their hearts and in their minds. There isn't a 'message' to it, as such.”

Art for art's sake is an increasingly precious thing.

Gustavo Guerra releases newest LP album “Nada Era a Favor”

Famous guitarist from Brazil, Gustavo Guerra, has released his debut instrumental LP record, “Nada Era a Favor” (“Against All Odds”). The record contains eleven original tracks in approximately 50 minutes' worth of listening. Guerra's record stands as a stupefying example of what is possible with an electric guitar in terms of both tonal quality and orchestration, proving that while heavy metal musicians have been utilizing the instrument in new ways since the early seventies, it remains possible to play it with the same versatility and sonorousness as a classically played violin.

Gustavo Guerra, who is famous in Brazil for being one of her top 30 guitarists in the nation, is the most standout element of “Nada Era a Favor.” His guitaring is natural, flawless, powerful, elegant, and charged with youthful vivacity and verve. He does not show off, even when his riffs sound impossible, every phrase emitting from his fingers with alacrity and precision that is often stunning to the ear.

Still, the wonderfully surprising characteristic of “Nada...” is in the excellence of the songwriting. The orchestration of the record is absolutely fantastic. The percussion is phenomenal, the bass guitar is remarkable, keyboards are used with a creativity that hasn't been seen much in decades, and the overall quality of the mixing and engineering can not possibly be better. The record, in short, is likely the best instrumental rock album to be released in many years.

Gustavo Guerra was born in Curitiba, Brazil. He learned to play guitar at the age of seven with his father, Buby Guerra, a professional musician, who also co-wrote the title track “Nada Era a Favor,” as well as “Que Nena Sos Vos.” Gustavo Guerra first gained popularity from his Youtube channel, GGUERRA, which he started in 2006. His music videos have been viewed by over 14 million people.

Asked about the record, Guerra says, “My passion for music gave me the strength to realize this dream, and now I’m very glad to share all those feelings with my fans, friends and listeners.” To his fans he also shares an additional message: “This album was made with lot of passion, tears and sacrifices. Follow your dream, and believe in yourself!”

Chorale Saint Kizito releases LP “Yalimin”

The famed ecclesiastical South African choir, Chorale Saint Kizito de Bingerville, has released its newest collection of psalms of praise, titled, “Yalimin (Conduis moi Ă´ Seigneur).” The full-length album is nearly an hour long with 10 tracks, each dedicated to the worship of Jesus and His Holy Mother, the Virgin Mary. Compositions are arranged and written by local music geniuses and devotees to Christ, Mr. Yapo Odo Blaise and Mr. Besse Marc Blanchard.

Coming from the region of Bingerville near the Ivory Coast capitol city of Abidjan, the album has a clear, wonderful, beautiful indigenous flavor that is a mix of South African rhythm, Zouk, and classical music. There is a delightful, natural tone not unlike much that is found in the Carribbean islands, which is understandable since the tone originated in the Ivory Coast. The Chorale Saint Kizito is comprised of 50 boys and girls, mostly students, all of whom love to sing and spend their free time praising their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. It has existed since 1998. “Yalimin” is their third published full-length record.

The Saint Kizito Choir has always been managed and supported by outstanding parishioners of the Saint Augustin Parish of Bingerville, and too many other Christians to properly name here. The Choir is dedicated to evangelize through songs, believing that songs communicate very well God's message to the heart and soul of humanity.

“Yalimin” by the Chorale Saint Kizito de Bingerville was produced by Mr. Elimon A., a fervent admirer of Saint Kizito Choir. It stands forever as a tribute to his late friend, the aforementioned songwriter and Choir Master, Mr. Yapo Odo Blaise, who wrote most of the songs contained on the album.

Mr. Elimon A. says of the album's message: “Praise of the Lord Jesus and joy in Jesus. Total obedience to the Lord Jesus for our salvation. Praise also to our Mother, the Virgin Mary.”

This outstanding choral record is available online worldwide.

Voltage Black releases newest EP “We, the Obsolete”

London based digital music artists Voltage Black have released their newest EP, “We, the Obsolete.”

London based digital music artists Voltage Black have released their newest EP, “We, the Obsolete.” The EP is a comprehensive treatment of their first single from their debut album, which is due out in September. The EP contains three iterations of “We, the Obsolete,” beginning with the official, standard release of the single, and followed by the “Ph03nix Remix” and “Singularity Edit.” These versions are each different enough to stand alone as an entirely individual song, and the EP comprises approximately 14 minutes of continual listening time as a result. The music fan would be mistaken to imagine that listening to this Voltage Black EP from start to finish would be like hearing a track on repeat. This is entirely not the case.

Voltage Black is, at its heart, studio musician and composer Ewan Fisher, who when performing live is joined by percussionist James Milton. The tone and general experience of Voltage Black is, in their own words, “unified by an aesthetic of layered psychedelic experimentalism.” To hear the record is to understand their aim in this. The music comes in and out like breeze, and rhythms are alive more than simply background. Fisher's choice of instrumentation is eclectic, surprising, and genuinely original, rather than simply an attempt at being unique or unorthodox.

They name as inspirations an unlikely grab bag of names and muses. Listing their main influences, Voltage Black writes, “Experimentation, wonky old tape sounds, Warp Records artists, Bjork, '90s and '00s post rock, Arthur Russell, Liars….” If this list provides only a vague idea of what music might be produced using these inspirations as a template, it is perhaps because “We, the Obsolete” is the furthest thing from derivative. They throw everything that sounds good into the mix, and don't spend any time trimming out the excess.

“Maximalism is a force for good,” says Voltage Black.

“We, the Obsolete” is available online everywhere beginning February 25, 2013.

Drogtech releases debut LP “Ordinary Life”

The digital music artist known only as Drogtech has released his debut LP record, “Ordinary Life.”

The Polish digital music artist known only as Drogtech has released his debut LP record, “Ordinary Life.” The album is composed of 12 original tracks having an average of five minutes playing time apiece, making his first full-length album a wonderfully comprehensive one, comprising an entire hour's worth of top quality listening time. The style of “Ordinary Life” is difficult to describe, but the tone is expansive, atmospheric, and very ambient. Drogtech himself says that he does not feel there is a fitting subgenre to describe the stylistic subgenre of his record.

“There is no specific genre that defines the style,” he writes, “but 'downtempo' would be the first thought.” He also mentions that his songs have a purposefully progressive touch, and this is very palpable when listening to the music.

The album is two years in the making, and was not always easy in composition. “'Ordinary Life' was created during a very emotional and personal period of time,” writes Drogtech. “I had the idea to focus on a more coherent piece of music. I’ve always been a huge fan of artistic albums because they tend to be very personal and emotional, so I decided to make my own.”

As a composer, Drogtech is very inspired. He lists among his most important influences the work of Paul van Dyk, Nick Warren, Sasha, Hybrid, Four Tet, Ulrich Schnauss, and Solarfields. Nevertheless, however, he remains his own biggest inspiration. “Some of the tracks were inspired by movies, others by the music I was listening to,” he writes, “but mostly by my state of mind at the time. There were sad and happy moments which can be reflected in the tracks. The first half of the album is more deep, while the second is optimistic.”

Music fans around the world can hear this for themselves. “Ordinary Life” is available online everywhere beginning February 26, 2013.

Ridah Redd releases newest EP “Ridah Music”

Ridah Redd, an up and coming hip-hop artist from Palm Beach County, has released his newest EP, titled, “Ridah Music.”

Ridah Redd, an up and coming hip-hop artist from Palm Beach County, has released his newest EP, titled, “Ridah Music,” on Godfather Records. The record is approximately 16 minutes long in five original tracks and showcases Ridah Redd in all his skyrocketing glory.

In addition to Redd himself, “Ridah Music” also features the talents of Kallosity, Brisco, Tay Dizm, and Jayde, with Kallosity and Jayde being themselves Redd's fellow artists on the Godfather Records label. Tay Dizm and Brisco are also published music artists in their own right, Tay Dizm for Nappy Boy, and Brisco on Cash Money, Poe Boy, and Universal Music, respectively. This extended play release from Ridah Redd also features the engineering talents of platinum producers Kajmir Royale, Lex Luger, Goldhands, and Dame Grease, as well as the work of 800 The Jewell.

The “Ridah Music” EP serves as an introduction to Ridah Redd for music fans who are just becoming familiar with him, but is also a prelude for what is soon to come. Redd plans to release more official music in 2013, including but not limited to a collaboration with famous hip hop musician, Lil' Wayne. The variety of styles on “Ridah Music” is unusually broad and comprehensive, working well towards proving to the urban underground scene that Ridah Redd is more than capable of performing hip hop in virtually all its major subgenres.

“This EP,” writes Redd, “is developed from recent tracks which I have recorded, a little taste of new Ridah Redd material to keep fans content till my mixtape and album are released. It shows that I can tackle many types of hip-hop music and that I am not a one-dimensional artist.”

That he is an artist of much depth and complexity is plain to hear from the record. The themes of “Ridah Music” vary with its different styles, but each line of Redd's writing has been given obvious forethought, and there is much intelligence behind his poetry.

“Ridah Music” is available February 26, 2013, from online retailers worldwide.

LightworkerX releases “Circle of Stone” EP

Grand Junction solo music artist LightworkerX has released his debut heavy metal EP, “Circle of Stone.”

Grand Junction solo music artist LightworkerX has released his debut heavy metal EP, “Circle of Stone.” The extended-play release comprises three original tracks by LightworkerX over a total of approximately 13 minutes of listening. Each of these songs is a shadowy piece of audio violence, each with a great deal of soul infusing both writing and performance, and although the EP is Lightworker's first appearance on the metal scene, there is more than enough talent and power behind the tiny record to leave music fans breathless for a full-length release in the same vein.

The title track, “Circle of Stone,” begins enigmatically, leading the listener into an unlikely, whirling pattern that is half dirge, half tolling bell, and it is not until Lightworker begins to sing in his Ozzy-esque tone that the structure of the song begins to form. Like wisps of smoke coagulating into wraiths, LightworkerX weaves his “circle” around the listener, and by the time he starts shredding into his guitar like a vicious cross between Freddy Krueger and Kirk Hammett (Metallica), the spell is already cast, and his tune is already spiraling the music fan into audio oblivion.

There is more than enough meat on “Circle...”'s bone to keep fans intently focusing on it for several repeats at a turn. Faint keyboards in the background seem to echo from the windows of abandoned stone towers. Percussion is often tribal, occasionally almost industrial in its machine-gun, double-kick pedal relentlessness. Lightworker's lyrics are insidiously occult, like the forgotten words of Druidic chants, yet also personal enough to keep a depth and complexity that is entirely human, if somewhat otherworldly, as well.

The end result is a trio of metal songs that positively deserves a re-issue on a longer, more comprehensive record by one of Colorado's most surprising songwriters. That LightworkerX happens also to be one of her most hyper-capable instrumentalists makes this release a necessity for any fan of the modern metal underground.

Gamrini releases new single, “M.O.E. (Money Over Everything)”

African Canadian hip hop artist Gamrini has released his most recent single, “M.O.E. (Money Over Everything).”

African Canadian hip hop artist Gamrini has released his most recent single, “M.O.E. (Money Over Everything).” This latest single has been released concurrently with an accompanying music video, available for viewing online everywhere. The track itself is a modern take on a classic theme regarding the urban struggle, the self-explanatory title being all one needs to know exactly where Gamrini is coming from.

“My album shares that no matter what situation you are in, you must stay true to yourself,” writes the artist regarding the message of his new single. “I was brought up rough, and those feelings are expressed through my album.”

This new album features infamous names such as French Montana, Trick Trick, and Toronto’s C4. In addition, Evil Empire has also provided as hosts, DJ Charlie Brown and DJ BJ3525. Naturally, with a roundup such as this a great many people in the hip hop underground are paying close attention to the up and coming Gamrini. Even Waka Flocka Flame is present to call out, “M.O.E.”

Regarding the tone and sound of his new 19 track LP record, “The Ambassador,” Gamrini says, “The album is raw and uncut; every song has its own mood. I share my experiences and stories on the beat for my fans to hear. It is safe to say I 'kept it real' throughout the whole album.”

This is easy to believe, as Gamrini is one of the most direct lyricists rapping in English today. Interestingly enough, he was actually raised in the inner city of Cairo, Egypt, and did not move to Queens, NYC, until the age of 13. At 24 he found himself in Canada, and has since started his own music production company, FTP Entertainment, a hip hop and r n' b music label.

He names as major influences Tupac, Pimp C, Juan, Jay-Z, Trick Trick, Styles P, French Montana, Biggie, and C Murder.

Azerbaijani hip-hop artist i.d.e.a.l releases newest LP “Teleport”

The skyrocketing hip-hop artist known as i.d.e.a.l. has released his newest LP, “Teleport.”

The skyrocketing hip hop artist known as i.d.e.a.l. has released his newest LP, “Teleport.” The record is a full length album composed of 13 original tracks that comprise 46 minutes of top notch urban style hip hop listening time. Its back beats are excellently composed, but not the main attraction, serving mainly as rhythm and groove to accompany the blazing talent of i.d.e.a.l., himself. The orchestration of the music is often heavily (and excellently) influenced by modern jazz and rhythm n' blues, over which i.d.e.a.l. raps with all the poetry and expert elocution of the genre's legendary godfathers.

The tone of 'Teleport” by i.d.e.a.l. is often somewhere between Warren G's “Regulate” and Us3's “Cantaloop,” although i.d.e.a.l. often speaks more directly and with more force than either of these artists. It is also worth mentioning that although “Teleport” is listed as bearing what is termed 'explicit language' by the modern music industry, i.d.e.a.l.'s lines are never gratuitous, ridiculous, or merely profane, his lyrical content seeming at all times deliberate, eloquent, and worthy of the listener's consideration.

I.d.e.a.l., himself, is an Azerbaijani hip hop musician from the capitol city, Baku. He was already fluent in Armenian when his passion for West Coast American rap began to transform into a talent of his own for composition and performance. He wrote constantly and took great pains to perfect his English pronunciation, which brilliant results are plain to hear in the surgical precision of his phrasing and delivery on this remarkable record. Although “Teleport” is not i.d.e.a.l.'s first venture into the recording studio, it represents the culmination of over ten years' worth of his masterful efforts in shaping his craft for all to hear.
“With hard work anything is possible,” writes i.d.e.a.l. “People are closed-minded and don't see the work you put in until you put it out for everyone to see. You have to have faith in yourself, no matter what happens. You have to respect others, too. This album [addresses] everyone that doubted, or who makes fun of those trying to get to that level of skill.”

Beat Voyage releases new LP “Counting Down”

The Athens based composer known as Beat Voyage has released his newest LP record album, “Counting Down.”

The Athens based composer known as Beat Voyage has released his newest LP record album, “Counting Down.” The record is an instrumental escapade through various audio settings and environments. It is composed of thirteen tracks and comprises approximately one hour's worth of listening. It is a work of modern classical that incorporates music from virtually every area of the sonic spectrum.

The general tone of “Counting Down” is remarkably elastic, touching on the respective sounds of pop rock, hip hop, French waltzes, contemporary island music, and having still a good many more tricks up its sleeve. The instrumentation is delightfully colorful and various, as well, having many songs lead by an electric guitar, others by an accordion played in the Mediterranean style, and even one melody that seems inspired by a harpsichord player from the seventeenth century.

Considering the amount of variety in its movements (the record, although broken into tracks, feels very much as if it were composed in movements) “Counting Down's” mood is remarkably consistent. The emotion underlying it is youthful, glad and whimsical, although it certainly has pensive moments of conflict to contrast against this, as well. All in all, Beat Voyage's “Counting Down” is a surprising and extremely creative work that deserves much more attention than today's typical pop album garners.

Beat Voyage names as influences the work of Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, all of whom figure largely as inspirations for various riffs and chord progressions on “Counting...” However, the famous Italian composer Ennio Morricone is perhaps the most obvious influence on the record, as the album boasts wonderfully epic and memorable melodies that recall his “Once Upon a Time in the West,” albeit with a much more seaside, Mediterranean feel. In this way “Counting Down” represents some of the most vivid, fun compositions produced in the last year.

Ivory Coast hip hop artist Prince Ama releases single, “Livin Crazy Life”

Prince Ama, a hip hop artist from the Ivory Coast, has released his latest single, titled, “Livin Crazy Life,” on the La Vie Entertainment label.

Prince Ama, a hip hop artist from the Ivory Coast, has released his latest single, titled, “Livin Crazy Life,” on the La Vie Entertainment label. The track is an adrenaline fueled pop track with heavy African roots and reggae influences. The back beats are complex and creative, the melody lines are fun and interesting, and the song in general is well suited for parties, dance halls, nightclubs, or simply driving around the city.

“My music shares a message of unity, love, and peace with my listeners,” says Prince Ama, who was born in Treichtown. A man of the world, he was educated in music at the Norwegian school of theater, music, and dance known as EDEC. At a young age he became fluent in the arts of performance and began winning local competitions. Adding a remarkable twist to his musical experience is his time with the National Musical Ballet of the Ivory Coast. He performed in France, Japan, Belgium, London, Norway, Germany, and Canada before arriving in the United States of America, where he toured the east and west coasts and opened for acts such as Sean Paul and Jaheim.

He is currently performing with his own band, International Flow360, which includes professional DJ work and stage dancers. He considers his own style of music to be in the Afro-reggae dance hall genre. He lists his major influences as Shaggy, Sean Paul, and Bob Marley, and signs of these influences are ever present in “Livin Crazy Life.”

“Livin Crazy Life” is not Prince Ama's first single, nor is it alone in the body of work produced by Ama during 2012. The single comes from his third album, in fact, titled “Matter of Time,” which was released worldwide on 21 October of that year. “Welcome to Vegas,” the single from his previous record, hit digital shelves on March 1 of 2011, followed by the full length album on April 2.
