The Los Angeles rap artist known as
Iwari has released his latest single, “This Is That R.E.A.L.” The
single is a heavy hitting urban anthem with contemporary themes,
regarding which Iwari lays out his perspective on a variety of
important topics. The sound is loaded with heavy bass and old-school
synth sounds such as those popularized by earlier West Coast artists,
like NWA and Snoop Doggy Dogg. Hip-hop fans looking for the same old,
tired gangsta rap will not find it in Iwari's, “This Is That
R.E.A.L.,” however. While his single retains the same direct,
in-your-face honesty and attitude that has characterized the Los
Angeles rap movement for decades, it eschews all shallow, meaningless
posturing for socially conscientious, humanitarian, and philosophical
poetry that asks as many important questions as it suggests simple
and insightful answers.
Regarding the message his track conveys
to the music-listening public, Iwari writes, “I want to use music
to give my comment on today's culture and society. 'This Is That
R.E.A.L.' is my gut reaction to 'Raw Experience that I Acquired
Living.'”
Iwari's experience goes further than
that of many young men in the modern world. He was born in St. Louis,
Missouri, but lived much of his life in New York City before coming
to Southern California, where he attended USC and played in the
Trojans' celebrated marching band. He is an accomplished player of
the piano, violin, and saxophone. He lists among his main influences
the artists Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre, Tech Nine, and Busta Rhymes, but
also remarks that the works of Michael Jackson and Ray Charles are
extremely important to him. Still, his heart is mostly wrapped in
rap.
“I want my listeners to hear what I
think is being swept under the table,” he writes. “I want them to
consider what no one talks about although they live it everyday, and
to see what lessons we can take from life’s experiences just the
way they come at you.”
“This Is That R.E.A.L.” by Iwari is the first official single from the upcoming LP album of the same name, and is available online worldwide beginning March 1, 2013.
