The Athens based composer known as Beat
Voyage has released his newest LP record album, “Counting Down.”
The record is an instrumental escapade through various audio settings
and environments. It is composed of thirteen tracks and comprises
approximately one hour's worth of listening. It is a work of modern
classical that incorporates music from virtually every area of the
sonic spectrum.
The general tone of “Counting Down”
is remarkably elastic, touching on the respective sounds of pop rock,
hip hop, French waltzes, contemporary island music, and having still
a good many more tricks up its sleeve. The instrumentation is
delightfully colorful and various, as well, having many songs lead by
an electric guitar, others by an accordion played in the
Mediterranean style, and even one melody that seems inspired by a
harpsichord player from the seventeenth century.
Considering the amount of variety in
its movements (the record, although broken into tracks, feels very
much as if it were composed in movements) “Counting Down's” mood
is remarkably consistent. The emotion underlying it is youthful, glad
and whimsical, although it certainly has pensive moments of conflict
to contrast against this, as well. All in all, Beat Voyage's
“Counting Down” is a surprising and extremely creative work that
deserves much more attention than today's typical pop album garners.
Beat Voyage names as influences the
work of Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, all
of whom figure largely as inspirations for various riffs and chord
progressions on “Counting...” However, the famous Italian
composer Ennio Morricone is perhaps the most obvious influence on the
record, as the album boasts wonderfully epic and memorable melodies
that recall his “Once Upon a Time in the West,” albeit with a
much more seaside, Mediterranean feel. In this way “Counting Down”
represents some of the most vivid, fun compositions produced in the
last year.
