English singer-songwriter and master
guitarist Max Dolan has released his latest EP, titled, “Lilac
Moonrise,” on the Isis Music Group label. The record is comprised
of seven original tracks in approximately 22 minutes of listening
play. It is the most recent official collection of studio music from
Dolan to date, and promises to be the harbinger of many full-length
records to come.
“Lilac Moonrise” has an ethereal
quality in terms of orchestration and tone that is reminiscent of
some of the most fantastic and unique post-modern experimentalists
from the late sixties and early seventies, such as Lou Reed's
infamously eclectic band, The Velvet Underground. The sound also
utilizes an ambient, spacious atmosphere such as Echo and the
Bunnymen were known for, as well as the lesser-known Mission UK.
These comparisons do not do justice, however, to the overarching
classic rock element of “Lilac...,” which also brings to mind
experimental classic-rock bands like Pink Floyd, Yes, and others. The
record, in fact, is unique in many ways that resist general
categorization.
Dolan was born in 1985 in Jersey,
United Kingdom. He is known for a flashy stage performance that is
the result of much obvious skill and time spent honing his inherent
talent. This can include such classic stage magics as playing behind
his head or with his teeth, such performance flair being more than
somewhat rare to the stage today. He began his professional career as
a session musician for the Jimi Hendrix Experience on the “Experience
Sessions” album. His infamous arctic-white, Gibson SG Special
Limited guitar he has dubbed, “Penelope, the Gypsy princess.”
2011 saw the beginning of his chemistry-charged collaboration with
percussionist Kofi Baker (son of Cream drummer, Ginger Baker).
When
asked about the themes of his music, Dolan says only, “What I try
and do with my music is to take people somewhere beautiful, in their
hearts and in their minds. There isn't a 'message' to it, as such.”
Art
for art's sake is an increasingly precious thing.
