FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
The musical talent known as Souls of
Sophie has released his latest EP, “Departure.” The EP is
comprised of five original songs for an approximate total listening
time of 20 minutes. It has been released on the Modern Wave Records
music label. Shadowy, smooth and darkly stylish, the “Departure”
EP from Souls of Sophie stands as evidence that the effects of dark
wave music are still thriving to the delight of thousands around the
world.
An official bio from Souls of Sophie
describes their music as modern-wave music. It describes modern wave
as “cathartic post-punk delving in surreal sonic landscapes yet
delivering a punchy sound.” The music is exceptional in its
adherence to minimalist sound forms. It's spaciousness shows an adept
use of quiet in bringing every note to the foreground, while its
subtle melody lines manage to be both intuitive and remarkably
catchy.
Souls of Sophie cite as main artistic
influences many of the keystones of the sound, such as Depeche Mode,
the Chameleons UK, the Cure, New Order, Joy Division, and Sisters of
Mercy. While fans of these artists will undoubtedly appreciate Souls
of Sophie's unique spin on the general mood and tone of the above,
Souls of Sophie also admits inspiration from less obvious sources,
such as James, Suede, Naked Eyes, Ocean Blue, OMD, Pixies, Radiohead,
Slowdive, Erasure, and even the Sex Pistols, though fewer nods to
these appear on “Departure” except thematically.
Regarding these overall themes, Souls
of Sophie writes that “'Departure' is about escape: from your
current situation ('Wonderland'), from your own mind ('Transition'),
from material excess ('Nothing'), from your past ('Never Again').”
Each great escape is represented in its
own dedicated song on the “Departure” EP. Only “Broken,”
appropriately located at the dead center of the powerful little
record, does not have an obvious tie to ideals of independence and
egression.
Souls of Sophie is currently piloted as
a solo project though the preceding record, the “Dusk” EP, was
recorded with the collaboration of other members. The truth remains
that Souls began as a one-man band, however.
“I taught myself how to play the
guitar my junior year of college” writes Souls, “and then the
year I 'took off' from school, I began recording songs using a
primitive setup consisting of a dual tape deck and a bass amp. A year
later, after graduating college and upgrading my studio (through the
use of my first credit card!) I recorded my first set of songs
released as Souls of Sophie, the band/project name inspired by a
character from the movie 'The Razor’s Edge.'”
“Departure” by Souls of Sophie is
available online worldwide beginning 4 April 2014. An official music
video from SoS is also in production.
