The Los Angeles indie and alt-rock band
billed as Paperfox have released their debut EP record,
“Dreamcatcher.” The extended-play album is composed of five
original tracks for an approximate total listening time of 20
minutes. It has been proudly published as an independent release
without support from the corporate music industry. Poppy, danceable,
upbeat and highly melodic, “Dreamcatcher” is a record which
defines the sound, personality and character of the youth of today,
and proves that the spirit of indie music in Southern California
continues to thrive.
Hailing from LA's Silverlake area,
Paperfox (often stylized PAPERFOX) cite as main artistic influences
such contemporary indie-rock heroes as the 1975, Fall Out Boy,
Vampire Weekend, Arctic Monkeys, Young the Giant, Two Door Cinema
Club, and Kings of Leon. As might be intuited from such a list, their
own sound fits naturally among the tones of these widely popular
bands. Every track on “Dreamcatcher” is a shoo-in for radio play,
a single just waiting for public attention to focus on it.
That Paperfox's first record is so easy
to imagine being played in cars all along the Santa Monica Fwy is no
accident. Paperfox writes of their artistic vision, “None of us
have ever played this style of music. All of us come from different
musical backgrounds spanning from hardcore, straight-edge, emo,
pop-punk, screamo, and other bands from the 'Warped Tour' scene...
But just recently, [we] decided to see what was constantly spinning
on the radio and heard bands like Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend,
Capital Cities, Arcade Fire, and thought, there's a market for this,
so why not?”
Paperfox are also true representatives
of the DIY music underground. Not only was “Dreamcatcher”
written, produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by the band
themselves, but also the digital marketing, promotion, web design,
social media marketing, and shirt designs were executed by the
members of the band, too. With gumption and ability like this in
equal parts, Paperfox won't be confined to the hipster Mecca of
Silverlake for long.
