The rapper known as Yoshi (usually
stylized Y0$#!) has released his latest hip-hop single, “It's a
Go.” The track has been released independent of support from the
corporate music infrastructure. Booming with bass, animated with
classic video game references and showcasing the vocal talents of one
of Atlanta's most original underground artists today, “It's a Go”
by Yoshi is one of the most creative hip-hop singles to emerge from
summer 2015.
Highlighting what is perhaps the most
diverse musical background of any rapper in recent memory, Yoshi
cites as main artistic influences Stevie Wonder, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z,
Daft Punk, Justice, Africa Bambaataa, Kenny G, Sade, Mozart, and
classic musicals such as Gigi and The Sound of Music.
This individualism is at the heart of
Yoshi's character both onstage and off. It's palpably audible in
“It's a Go” and other tracks available online for listening from
Yoshi, and he's quick to speak openly about not fearing to be
different.
Asked to comment on the theme of his
new “It's a Go” single, Yoshi writes, “Be you and never let
anyone change that fact.”
Yoshi, who is originally from
Cincinnati, got his start in hip hop as a beatboxer. As his older
brother and friends cut their teeth making rhymes, Yoshi provided
organic beats. This off-the-cuff element to his music has also stayed
with him. Does he write his own lyrics? Yes, he does. He remarks,
however, that most of his songs are freestyles written in the moment
of performance.
The artist has been noted for his
ability to mimic “almost any sound.” One commenter on his
official SoundCloud page even asks where he got his Nintendo-based
sample from for “It's a Go.”
Yoshi has at times been likened to Big
KRIT, Young Jeezy, Linkin Park, Blink 182, David Banner and Pastor
Troy.
He has performed as far away as the
SXSW festival, and as close at hand around Atlanta as Buckhead's Hole
in the Wall, Edgewood's Esoral, midtown's Enclave, downtown Atlanta's
Winston Cigars, and in the East Atlanta Village's iLounge and Union
venues.
“It's a Go” by Yoshi is available
online for listening from the artist's official website now [link
provided below]. It becomes available for purchase at over 750 online
music outlets worldwide circa Aug. 22, 2015.
