The modern folk group known at home and
abroad as the Lost Gecko have released their latest single, “Rescued
by Waves.” The single has been proudly published as an independent
music release without the support of the corporate music industry.
Lush, sonorous, and bringing the band's uniquely Scottish character
to the world at large for the first time, “Rescued by Waves” is a
contemporary folk single that will please fans of many music styles.
At the heart of the Lost Gecko is
singer and songwriter Malcolm Urquhart. Urquhart cites as main
artistic influences Bon Iver, Sigur Ros, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica,
Pearl Jam, Elvis Presley, Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Howard, and John
Butler. Audiophiles will mostly detect in the music of the Lost Gecko
vocal elements of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, along with songwriting
that blends Bon Iver's neo-folk with the intensity of Sigur Ros and
the powerful delivery of Smashing Pumpkins. This undercurrent of
grunge-era passion runs throughout the Lost Gecko's music, charging
its mellow folk tones with an intensity not often found in the genre.
Speaking of his roots in music,
Urquhart writes, “I started playing guitar at 16 when my dad's best
friend handed me a guitar to mess about on. I was hooked. I started
learning Jimi Hendrix, [Joe] Satriani, all the great guitarists. Then
heard Pearl Jam and began songwriting."
The Lost Gecko's first EP, “Electrify
the Seas” appeared in 2006 and won the group fans in disparate
locales such as Canada, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
“I kept recording and playing gigs
after this when the encouragement and comments around my music kept
coming,” Urquhart writes. “And so here we are in 2015 with our
debut album which has taken over two years now, but I know it'll be
worth the effort.”
The record Urquhart mentions is their
forthcoming debut, “Unphotographable,” produced by Bobby Lee and
John Burke at Claycastle Studios in County Cork, Ireland. The present
“Rescued by Waves” track is the chief single from the record. It
is being released with an official music video.
“The album is personal to myself,”
writes Urquhart. “I work with young people and the homeless. Many
of the tracks are about how lucky I feel to be able to play music and
how easily my situation could have been different.”
The current lineup of the Lost Gecko
features Malcolm Urquhart (vocals, guitar) Leo Mullane (guitar) and
Cormac Brenock (keys).
