The rap crew known around the world as
Roll 4 Self have released their new single, “City Lights.” In
addition to the talents of Roll 4 Self (Georgia hip-hop artists Big C
and Tee) the track features additional skills and performances by
Jasmine Rhey and Loose Bills. It has been published proudly on the
Roll 4 Self Productions independent music label, entirely without
support from the mainstream corporate music industry. With style,
rhythm and urban groove deeper and more smooth than anything from the
underground rap genre in months, “City Lights” is a single all
fans of the scene can get behind.
Roll 4 Self cite as main artistic
influences such legends of the mic as Tupac Shakur, Outkast, T.I.,
and Jay-Z. Elements of each of these are easily noted in “City
Lights,” but their own inimitable sound is one that marks them as
one of the best contemporary hip-hop bands to come from Georgia. This
unmistakable character, joined on “City Lights” by Jasmine Rhey's
clarion, crystalline vocals and by the heavy-hitting lines and rhymes
of Florida's own rapper, Loose Bills, is not an easy combination to
match with anything else.
Roll 4 Self have been performing since
the early 2000s. Their official band bio describes their usual
subgenres as including street, dance, and smooth hip hop, the latter
to which “City Lights” specifically belongs. Roll 4 Self have
performed a great many live shows over the years and sold albums both
in the United States of America and overseas.
Asked to describe any inherent message
their new track might have in store for fans and new listeners, Roll
4 Self write simply, “'City Lights' is smooth hip hop capturing the
thoughts of the night life under the city lights with a feature from
Florida rapper Loose Bills, along with the angelic vocals of Jasmine
Rhey.” They cap off this description: “Just ride and enjoy.”
“City Lights” by Roll 4 Self is
available online worldwide beginning 9 August 2014.
