FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
The roots reggae band known as Cali
Conscious has released their debut LP record, “High Times.” The
album is comprised of 12 original tracks for an approximate total
listening time of 45 minutes. It has been proudly and independently
published on the Organic Roots Records music label. A warm, friendly,
groovy and consistently uplifting collection of songs, “High Times”
is both aptly named and one of 2014's most pleasantly fun records so
far.
Cali Conscious' official bio describes
them as a blend of roots reggae, folk rock, jazz, rhythm 'n' blues
and alternative music. Their songs are populated with melodic
choruses and three-part harmonies, upbeat rhythms and socially and
environmentally conscientious lyrics. They cite as main artistic
influences Bob Marley, Steel Pulse, Jack Johnson, James Taylor,
Rebelution, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Sublime, Donovan
Frankenreiter, Mishka, and Saritah.
While elements of each of these can be
easily picked out in various songs on “High Times,” Jack Johnson
and Bob Marley are perhaps most closely related in terms of tone and
feel. Music by Cali Conscious is summery and bright without a tinge
of saccharine. Their instrumentation alone communicates genuinely
good vibrations, while their carefully penned lyrics espouse humanist
and naturalist ideals.
Asked to comment on the themes of their
music, Cali Conscious mentions four topics in capital letters:
“Positivity, One Love, Peace, Environmental Stewardship. The
industry is so saturated with negative messages and electronic
music,” they write. “We want to bring back musicianship, a great
live performance, and a message of peace, love, and unity.”
Cali Conscious are more than members of
a band, though. They're also active members of the global community.
In 2013, they ran a beach clean up every third Saturday of the month
in their home base of Huntington Beach. They raised $5000 from tips
earned at live performances and donated the funds to build a water
well in Ethiopia through the non-profit organization, charity:water.
They even released their debut LP, “High Times,” as a digital
download card embedded with carrot, lettuce, and tomato seeds on
their own label, Organic Roots Records.
That Cali Conscious are guided by lofty
and admirable principles seems clear. That their music sounds even
better than their philosophies makes “High Times” a record not to
be missed, as spring hits its stride and the beach-party boombox
aches for new material.
