Fresh Kymm releases standout single “Be Friends”

Bay Area rapper Fresh Kymm has released his flagship single and accompanying video “Be Friends.” In “Be Friends,” Kymm explains in no uncertain terms that he is available in the most gentlemanly fashion to his compatriots of the female variety, and that they should by no means feel uncomfortable coming to him for tenderness, compassion and (ahem) comfort whenever their need should arise. The real art of his lyrics (and of his poise in the video) is that he manages to communicate this intent in a remarkably charming manner that allows the listener to smile with him and agree with his devil-may-care attitude, although Kymm’s rapping, itself, is more than worth the price of admission.

The song is a delightfully jaunty one, which is not surprising because Fresh Kymm is a refreshingly debonaire rapper from Oakland with an easygoing tone to his style that is reminiscent of Warren G, and incidentally with a degree from Clark Atlanta University, also. His mannerisms, though audible in the single, itself, are perhaps most endearing in the video (which video is a product of Eleven Four Productions and remarkably well-directed by James Calhoun, who has worked with Tupac Shakur and Mario Van Peebles, among others). Both hearing him rap on the recording and seeing him do so in the video make strong arguments that Kymm is, himself, a genuinely nice person, which adds a warmth and humor to “Be Friends” that would seem merely flippant or even misogynistic if it were performed by a rapper with less class, or by one with less panache.

In his professional life, Fresh Kymm is known as Kymm Wilson: Professional Homie, which moniker could not possibly be worn in earnest by any other successful businessman. Kymm’s friendliness and apparent honesty is further reflected in his plain speech. “I create music from the heart,” he says. “I find the postive things in life and create feel-good moments that are memorable through music.”

The artist, who lists among his most powerful inspirations Marvin Gaye, Rob Thomas, Sublime, and Parliament Funkadelic, has also a simple request of his fans: “Forget about the trouble and smile while you listen to my music.”

“Be Friends” is available everywhere online beginning January 11 of 2013.
