Brainyboxer releases self-titled debut EP

Paris-based folk 'n' rock band Brainyboxer has released their self-titled debut EP. The extended-play release comprises five original tracks from the eclectic group, who are a singer-guitarist, a pianist, and a violinist from Australia and England, respectively. Though this core, acoustic trio forms the soul and principal force of Brainyboxer, their “Brainyboxer” EP features backing instruments such as drum and percussion, cellos, horns, electric bass and guitars, and more. The EP also features the production and musical talents of Benoit Portolano, from sensational Parisian band, Blackfeet Revolution.

The warm, natural sound of Brainyboxer is part folk music, part indie rock, and part traditional piano bar, with just a dash of pop thrown in for good measure. Singer Roderic croons and trills like a beautiful and ingenious cross between Rob Dickenson of Catherine Wheel and Rhett Miller of Old 97s. Violinist Ruth plays with powerful undercurrents of passion that often steal the spotlight in spite of her delicate restraint and subtlety. Pianist Peter accounts for much of the unlikely, gorgeous 19th century feel Brainyboxer boasts. Although their EP is entirely modern in terms of production and delivery, their music has deep wild-west saloon overtones mixed with a certain Paris burlesque, circa 1890.

Among the best qualities of the “Brainyboxer” EP is an expressive, clear and earnest humanity their music communicates. Its ambiance, lyrics and composition thrum with an endearing goodness that cannot be faked, and which pervades the band's character in general. Their website, which showcases their debut music video from the EP, also has a direct chat line to the band members, themselves, who promise to get back to you at their earliest convenience (URL below). Their photos are unassuming and unpretentious, and they've even made a video from their first live performance available – a gesture so open and neighborly to fans that it's impossible not to fall in love with them having seen it.

In short, Brainyboxer is one of the precious few bands that keeps the future of music bright and hopeful, and their debut, self-titled EP is a work of fine, fine musical art that will leave a little empty space in the musical heart of anyone who misses out on it.

This small tragedy is entirely unnecessary, however. “Brainyboxer” by Brainyboxer is available online worldwide beginning March 30, 2013.
