London based digital music artists
Voltage Black have released their newest EP, “We, the Obsolete.”
The EP is a comprehensive treatment of their first single from their
debut album, which is due out in September. The EP contains three
iterations of “We, the Obsolete,” beginning with the official,
standard release of the single, and followed by the “Ph03nix Remix”
and “Singularity Edit.” These versions are each different enough
to stand alone as an entirely individual song, and the EP comprises
approximately 14 minutes of continual listening time as a result. The
music fan would be mistaken to imagine that listening to this Voltage
Black EP from start to finish would be like hearing a track on
repeat. This is entirely not the case.
Voltage Black is, at its heart, studio
musician and composer Ewan Fisher, who when performing live is joined
by percussionist James Milton. The tone and general experience of
Voltage Black is, in their own words, “unified by an aesthetic of
layered psychedelic experimentalism.” To hear the record is to
understand their aim in this. The music comes in and out like breeze,
and rhythms are alive more than simply background. Fisher's choice of
instrumentation is eclectic, surprising, and genuinely original,
rather than simply an attempt at being unique or unorthodox.
They name as inspirations an unlikely
grab bag of names and muses. Listing their main influences, Voltage
Black writes, “Experimentation, wonky old tape sounds, Warp Records
artists, Bjork, '90s and '00s post rock, Arthur Russell, Liars….”
If this list provides only a vague idea of what music might be
produced using these inspirations as a template, it is perhaps
because “We, the Obsolete” is the furthest thing from derivative.
They throw everything that sounds good into the mix, and don't spend
any time trimming out the excess.
“Maximalism is a force for good,”
says Voltage Black.
“We, the Obsolete” is available
online everywhere beginning March 25, 2013.
