The emerging music geniuses known as
Starflight have released their newest official single, “Phasers on
Stun.” The single is from their up and coming LP titled, “Adventure
Beyond.” It features a post-disco pop beat, synthesized instruments
in the neon styles of 1980, and vocals that are as catchy and
heartwarming as they are fun. Fun is at the very core of Starflight's
introductory single, and if it is any indication of what “Adventure
Beyond” will be, then fans of creative dance music have something
exciting and wonderful to look forward to.
“Phasers on Stun” is a work of
great talent on many levels, the most obvious being instrumentally
and vocally – the members of Starflight (Jib Khan and Damien
Spanjer) have impeccable ears for pitch, timbre, and harmony – but
the real genius is in their songwriting. Although “Phasers on Stun”
is inspired by the popular music of thirty-plus years ago, Starflight
does not sound like any band from that era in particular. Their
vocals have much in common with The Beach Boys, though, and the music
from Michael Jackson's “Captain EO” comes to mind for its
atmosphere in general. The cosmic effects that laser throughout their
track are reminiscent of ELO's records. In other words, Starflight is
producing music that has much in common with some of music's most
excellent writers.
This is part of what drives Starflight
to make music in this incredibly unique way, as opposed to the
humdrum, mindless tracks churned out by today's music industry for
play at seedy nightclubs. When asked what prompted them to begin
writing and performing, Jib Khan writes, “[It was] hairs going up
on the back of my neck while listening to certain songs on the radio.
I wanted to recreate that.”
Recreating that means dialing back the
clock to a time when music was something more than an image, a sound
that meant more than what its performers looked like. Starflight
writes in their bio that they have a “mutual fondness for pop music
of the pre-MTV era, when songwriting was a master craft, hooks were
aplenty, and you didn’t have to wax your chest to appear in the
video clip.”
“Phasers on Stun” represents more
than an image, too; it's the beginning of a new, modern life for a
revived sound and principle. Put simply, Starflight means music like
you remember it.
