New York City musician Nimo Kally has
released his newest EP record, titled, “Espresso River.” The
record includes three original tracks for a total of 11 minutes'
playing time. It is the debut official release from Kally as a solo
artist, though he has been performing rock music as a bassist,
vocalist, and singer-songwriter for several years. Though “Espresso
River” is only an EP constructed from three songs (essentially a
single release with two B-side tracks) the little record is skillful,
heartfelt, tasteful, stylish, and extremely well-written. It is also
extremely affordable, so there's no risk in meeting Nimo Kally as he
is introduced to the world for the first time.
Kally's singing style bares attributes
reminiscent of Thom Yorke's understated, crackling mode of crooning,
although neither too derivative nor too similar. The rhythms to which
Kally plays his songs can also be soft and jazzy, also not unlike
Radiohead (see Track 3 of Kally's EP, “Way Up in the Air”).
His overall feel, however, emanates the
shadowy charm of Bowie, and the gentle darkness of The Cure's Robert
Smith. His tones maintain a fluid coolness, too, and his tempos keep
a steady, laid-back groove that invokes the tidal, tick-tock flows of
Pink Floyd. This is all in the way of describing what is best heard
firsthand, however. Kally has a sound that is all his own.
This individual sound comes from Nimo
Kally's 15 years (and counting) in the music industry, fulfilling a
fairly wide variety of roles. Since his time as a teenaged rocker,
Kally has been a composer and producer, as well as a radio DJ at two
of Israel's most reputable radio stations, Tel Aviv Radio, 102 FM,
and Kol Hacampus, 106 FM. Since moving to NYC in 2004, he has worked
with some of the industry's most brilliant minds, including the Top
Billboard producer and engineer, Lior Magal, of Sony, BMG, and Geffen
Records.
This debut EP, “Espresso River,” is
composed entirely of Kally originals, produced by Kally himself with
Zak Soulam (PRIZM Music – Suzanne Vega, Babyface). Mastering was
done by Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, California Guitar Trio).
“Espresso River” by Nimo Kally is
available online worldwide beginning spring of 2013.
