The singer-songwriter known as Brooke
Josephson has released her debut single, “No for an Answer.” The
track is an explosive, arresting introduction to Josephson's music,
and one of this year's most stunning surprises in entertainment so
far. It is being released with an official music video. “No for an
Answer” is dynamic, powerful, and deeply passionate without
becoming melodramatic. Representing the public's first glimpse of her
upcoming EP record, “Live and Let Live,” “No for an Answer”
is certain to ensure Josephson's proper place in the music spotlight
for years to come.
The single is a rock ballad with pop
sensibilities and Phil-Specter style “wall of sound” production.
Josephson's soaring vocals have the operatic quality of Celine Dion
combined with the vivacity of more daring, exuberant female artists
such as Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, and Demi Lovato. Her delivery
is remarkable in her capacity to roar with the ferocity of an animal
while maintaining surgical precision. She places trills at the tops
of crescendos so delicate and subtle that the casual listener can
easily miss them. The effect of her performance in “No for an
Answer” is one of measured sonic violence, feelings of rage without
cruelty, and of exulting in triumph. Its momentum presses on after
the song is done, as if the rest of Josephson's EP were somehow there
in the pregnant silence that follows.
Speaking of the themes of “No for an
Answer,” Josephson writes, “The
song was inspired by a former A&R executive, who told me I was
‘too old to make it in the music business.’”
Fewer
rebuttals in history have been as damning as this debut song. She
continues, “Life is too short. If I can make a difference in one
person’s life through my music just as other artists have impacted
mine, then mission accomplished. To quote one of my biggest artistic
influences, Patti Smith, ‘when you hit a wall, just kick it in.’”
Smith
may have said it, but clearly, Josephson has done it.
“No
for an Answer” by Brooke Josephson is available online worldwide
beginning spring 2013.
