The Khmer solo artist of heavy metal
rock music known as Solid Stone has released his new LP record album,
“Black Rose,” to widespread critical and fan acclaim. The album
is comprised of 10 original tracks for a total playing time of
approximately 42 minutes. It has been released on the Sila Records
music label. A collection of original rock compositions from one of
the finest instrumentalists and performers Cambodia has ever
produced, “Black Rose” by Solid Stone is certain to put Khmer
metal on the musical map internationally, once and for all.
The sound of “Black Rose” stretches
across the spectrum of rock possibilities. It is charged with
adrenaline, as powerful as an erupting volcano, and more emotional
than a Russian opera. Not to be missed is “Path to Goodness (Plov
Sang Bon),” a haunting, chilling song that couples a dark, shadowy
organ with Solid Stone's electrifying guitar. The record is also
occasionally upbeat and full of the fun that has kept rock 'n' roll
more popular than any other style of music since the 1950s, such as
in the track, “Get Up! (Krok Chho Lerng!).” “You Want the Moon?
(Jong Ban Preah Chan?)” is melodic, passionate and intense, like
the best emo bands of the early 2000s. The album's opening and
closing tracks, “Miss You Baby” and “Why Are My Tears Falling?
(Hait Avey Tirk Pnek Ho?)” showcase Solid Stone's remarkably
gorgeous vocals as well as his poetic and well-constructed lyrics.
Solid Stone is the stage name of the
endlessly talented Kang Piseth, who lives in the capitol city of
Phnom Penh. He lists as main artistic influences classic metal
rockers such as Van Halen, Dream Theater, and Whitesnake. He has been
writing and playing music since the age of eight.
He writes of his record that it
revolves around the themes of “love, broken hearts, encouragement,
believing in oneself, staying strong in mind, and the doing of good
in the world.”
Piseth is the first Khmer artist to be
signed by the ever-more-popular Sila Records.
