The author of children's literature
from Rhode Island known as Mark Binder has released his latest spoken
word album, titled, “Cinderella Spinderella,” to broad youth and
critical acclaim. Binder is the author of such popular titles as “The
Everything Bedtime Story Book,” 'The Brothers Schlemiel,” “A
Hanukkah Present! Twelve Stories to Give and Share (Life in Chelm)
Vol. 1,” “It Ate My Sister,” and many more. A well traveled
public speaker, Binder performs his stories by narrating them live
and unscripted, complete with off-the-cuff embellishments.
“Cinderella Spinderella” represents his latest spoken word
release.
His successful KickStarter campaign for
“Cinderella Spinderella” ended on February 15 with hundreds of
pledged dollars in excess of his goal. This goal was reached with the
help of his loyal legion of fans, many of whom have been following
his creative works since the nineties.
“I’ve been writing and telling
stories for more than 20 years,” comments the author. “A few
years ago, I got stuck in an elevator with a bunch of kids ages 5 to
50. There was nowhere to go, no place to pee, so I started telling
stories.”
This remarkable venue began something
that couldn't be kept in anything so small as an elevator.
“'Cinderella Spinderella' is a spoken
word piece for families that gives a classic story a contemporary
message of empowerment,” Binder says.
The story itself revolves around the
traditional Cinderella rags-to-riches theme, but with an urban
context and a protagonist who uses a wheelchair. Though these
alterations may seem unlikely, Binder's tale flows easily and
intuitively. It is easy to forget that the children's story has ever
run another way.
As with all of Binder's works, healthy
overtones of humor blanket “Cinderella Spinderella.” In addition
to the Brothers Grimm, he cites as main artistic influences Bill
Cosby and the musical comic genius, Frank Zappa.
Binder has published more than a dozen
books, hundreds of short stories, and recorded six albums. His
collection “The Bed Time Story Book” has sold more than 60,000
copies in seven editions. He tours the United States sharing his
books and spoken-word stories with audiences of all ages.
“Cinderella Spinderella” is
