The experimental pop-rock band from
Cincinnati known as Revenge Piñata
have released their sophomore LP record, “Neon Eyes,” on
Grasshopper Juice Records. The album contains 10 original tracks for
a total playing time of 38 minutes. “Neon Eyes” is an extremely
eclectic, colorful electro-pop record with upbeat themes and
ingenious songwriting, powered by passionate performances by all four
Revenge Piñata members.
The overall sound
of Revenge Piñata is impossible to depict without alluding to other
pioneers of experimental rock, with whom RP shares an endlessly
creative, independent spirit that goes back decades. Should one cross
the mentality and digital instrumentation of the Flaming Lips with
the crashy, smashy defiance of The Pixies, the timbre would be very
similar to Revenge Piñata's “Neon Eyes.” Mix in the tones of an
8-bit Nintendo Entertainment System, and you're nearly there. There
is a gorgeous, ambient feel to their music. Their lyrics are the
poetic, brilliant rants of madmen.
For instance, a
particularly colorful line from their 2011 album, “Hungry Ghost,”
runs, “The apple looks so tasty – my delicious belligerence...
Well! with satisfaction, who's biting whose tongue?”
“Neon
Eyes” is crammed with singles in that improbable way that makes an
album radio friendly from start to finish. Unstoppable songs like
“Cool as an Oscillator,” “Apollonia,” and “Up C”
literally follow one after another for a continuous series of total
excellence that could not be here described without listing the LP's
entire catalog. It is a natural flow of rock perfection that is
neither derivative nor obscure. It is rhythm and groove, art and
aggression, and far more fun than being five years old at Disneyland.
Revenge
Piñata is Nick Mitchell, Joe Berger, Hank
Loos, and Michael J. Hamilton.
Get
in early, music fans. This is one of the really, truly great ones.
“Neon Eyes” by Revenge Piñata is available online everywhere
beginning 13 April 2013.
