FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
The music composer and performer David
Cohen has released his new EP record album, titled, “Back in the
Dream.” The album is comprised of eight original tracks for an
approximate total listening time of half an hour, making for a round
and comprehensive experience that approaches the depth and complexity
of a full-length record. An arresting, strikingly accomplished
collection of songs featuring world-class talent in its writing,
singing, instrumental performance and studio production, “Back in
the Dream” is an undeniable victory of genuine musical art.
David Cohen cites as main artistic
influences such songwriters and performers as Billy Joel, the
Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Elton John, Dar Williams, Jackson
Browne, the Indigo Girls, and Keane. Of these selections, Cohen's own
music most recalls that of Elton John and Billy Joel, but also with
an earnestness and good humor reminiscent of the '80s pop composer,
Joe Jackson. Cohen's adherence to high artistic standards of quality,
crossed with a humility that is easily heard in his tone, timbre and
lyrics, makes for imaginative, uplifting and often inspirational
listening.
Cohen writes of his characteristic
style, “Hopefully it’s the absence of an agenda that makes these
songs enjoyable for the right listeners. Over the past couple of
decades, when I’ve 'tried' to write songs, the 'trying' has only
gotten in the way. These eight songs are the ones that just happened
to show up on their own over the years. The romantic in me believes
that when this happens, the music has a purpose and needs to be
shared with others.”
David Cohen is a 39-year-old husband,
father, and internal medicine physician who lives in Atlanta, GA. He
began playing piano at five and preferred to play by ear rather than
to read music. As a teenager he developed a desire to sing, his
method of practice being to record himself imitating Billy
Joel. His first original songs were written in high school and early
college, two of which are included on “Back in the Dream”
(“Whatever You Choose,” “Anthony and the Old Goodtime Guitar”).
In college, Cohen was accepted into the
seminal a cappella crew, Spur of the Moment. Now a solo performer, he
regards his Spur experiences and friendships as some of the biggest
influences on his music. His professional music career was limited to
summer breaks in college playing piano at an Italian restaurant and
singing / playing at a hotel. Graduate school, marriage and
parenthood delayed his goal of recording a studio record until now.
The title for “Back in the Dream” was chosen by his wife, taken
from the lyric of Track 4, “Ordinary Life.”
Cohen's official bio states that he has "no immediate plans to perform publicly or to record more
music. I sincerely hope that these songs will somehow find
their way to their intended audience, whoever that might be.”
David shares a home with his wife,
daughter, and cat.
