FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
The music duo known as Perks have
released their LP record album, titled, “Strong.” The album is
comprised of 10 original tracks for an approximate total listening
time of half an hour. With an average track length of around two
minutes and thirty seconds, “Strong” is a kaleidoscope of musical
creativity that moves from song to song like passing sunlight through
stained glass windows. Warm, delicately gorgeous and absolutely
genuine, “Strong” by Perks is one of the most heartfelt records
available today.
Perks is the professional name of
spouses Emma and Liam Perks from an unpopulated corner of Scotland.
Emma is responsible for their song composition and the lilting,
beautifully stylized vocals that form the keystone of their
characteristic sound, while Liam polishes their musical arrangements
and plays guitar. They cite as main artistic influences such
songwriters as JJ Gilmour, Kenny Rogers, and John Denver.
Speaking of the themes their album has
in store for listeners, Perks write, “The album deals with all the
aspects of life – the joys and sorrows, the trials and the
triumphs. Music is a great healer but also a great celebration, and
there are songs on this album for both.”
While listening to the record, one gets
the impression of catching glimpses of someone's life, of everyone's
life, a casual stroll through the human condition. This comes
partially from Emma Perks' creative method.
“Whatever mood I am in,” she
writes, “there is always a song to go with it. I come from a family
who feel the need to burst into song at every opportunity and has a
song for every occasion. Music is my therapy, if I ever feel down or
stressed, I pick up the guitar and sing until I feel better. My songs
reflect how I am feeling at the moment I write them. My children are
great inspiration for song writing and are always the first to listen
and critique them. Our 8 year old also helps with the lyrics for some
of the songs.”
A great deal of landscape is audible in
“Strong,” too. No effort has been made to crowd Emma's vocals nor
Liam's guitar. Vast swaths of hush envelop each strummed chord and
each trilled lyric like breezes through tall grass.
“Living in a remote and beautifully rugged area helps a lot with the music,” she writes. “I find the landscape and peacefulness is an amazing catalyst in song writing. The music often comes to me while out walking with the children and dogs.”
Though Perks do not officially consider
their music to be genre specific, Emma states that she is “a bit
country at heart,” and a definite modern folk sound is prominent in
their lyrical mood and tonal timbre. They recently won
WeLoveYourSongs.com's Best New Unsigned Artist competition, and have
placed their single, “I Cry for You,” on a CD to raise money for
the Inverness-based charity, Highland Hospice.
