Godwin began playing music by ear at
the age of 5. He cites as main artistic influences the music of
greats such as Prince, the Pet Shop Boys, Trent Reznor, Moby, and M8.
Currently hailing from the musical hotbed of the Washington, DC area,
he has been writing and performing his music for more than a decade.
His considerable repertoire includes four full-length records, three
extended-play releases, and a long, storied list of singles and demo
tracks. He has been nominated for the Washington, DC Area Music
Association's WAMMIE Award more than 20 times, and has walked away
with it twice in the electronica music category.
Upon being asked directly about the
connotation his record may hold for his legion of fans, Godwin
comments both candidly and concisely.
“This album was inspired by what goes
on at gay bath houses,” he writes.
With song titles such as “God Damn
You're Beautiful,” “Boy Seventeen,” and “Glamor &
Damage,” it's clear that much verve and sensuality pulses in the
veins of this passionate album, but it isn't all devil-may-care
romance. Tracks such as “It's About Your Soul” and the delicately
toned “Got a Lot of Static” imply even more complex, mature
themes. It is worth noting that while Godwin's record may be
suggestive, it isn't crass at any point – the black flag of the
“Parental Advisory, Explicit Lyrics” label is appropriately
absent.
Godwin was originally signed to the San
Francisco label, INgrooves, in 2003, where he joined the family that
included Tina Turner, Thievery Corporation, The Crystal Method, Jimmy
Buffet, Jody Whatley, Paul Oakenfold and Dolly Parton. His live
performances commenced in June 2004, since which time he has
entertained nearly 300,000 fans. During his time leading the popular
digital act, Delphinium Blue, Godwin opened for Crystal Waters, Ultra
Nate, Ari Gold, and Sophie B. Hawkins.
