The rapper of instant hip-hop classics known as Real Reid has released his new LP record, “Plant Life.” The album is comprised of 13 all-original tracks for a total playing time of approximately 30 minutes. Though Real Reid has been active in the underground hip-hop scene for some time, “Plant Life” is beginning to prove itself more and more indicative of the massive talent he has in store for music listeners all over the globe, and it is sure to remain one of the early and enduring examples of his greatness throughout his career.
Reid's record is populated with genius-level writing that permeates his sound, making his rhymes and lines the real attraction, closely followed by his razor-sharp delivery and performance. An even closer third is the excellent taste with which his beats and melodies on “Plant Life” are composed. Mellow, groovy tracks like the opening track, “Back to the Spaceship,” and the vinyl-era golden sound of “Poundflip” prove that Reid is an artist of immaculate style, not unlike former-day jazz rappers US3.
Reid himself cites as main musical influences De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, Slum Village, Quincy Jones, Hiroshima, Stereolab, Miles Davis, and Theolonius Monk. However, he also prominently mentions graffiti art, Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, Transcendentalist writer Ralph Waldo Emerson, post-Impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh, and cinema in general.
“My message,” writes Real Reid candidly, “is that although we are growing in a finite and temporary society in which conformity is the norm, dare to be different! Challenge yourself and do what you love!”
Hailing from the musical hotbed of Detroit, MI, Reid has auditioned at the world-famous Apollo and appeared in his youth on the Jenny Jones Show. His eclectic, no-spotlights-necessary approach to the music world has resulted in a clamoring, top-shelf crew of fans among the hip-hop underground scene, many of them musical notables, themselves (Blu, Dumbfoundead, et al). Inspired by the just-for-art's-sake anonymity of graffiti artists, Reid often performs without claiming his music. As his official bio states, therefore, “You may have seen his work and not realized it was Reid.”
