The singer-songwriter known as Hinano
Reia has released her newest EP, titled, “Hinano Reia in New York,”
to rave early reviews. The EP is comprised of five original tracks
for a total of just over 20 minutes' listening time. A classy,
contemporary pop record with jazz and rock elements, “Hinano Reia
in New York” is a gorgeously written and performed album that will
please listeners from a broad variety of music genres, and which is
poised to place Reia at the top of the ladder with the very best
female solo artists of the last 20 years.
“I started listening to and singing
blues at a young age,” comments Reia of her musical history. “There
was nowhere to sing blues in my town, so I became a jazz singer to
get work at a jazz club. Later I moved onto every style of music,
including rock, pop, new age, folk, techno and more eclectic styles.”
Intuitively, “Hinano Reia in New
York” showcases her background in all these musical styles with a
seamless gloss that bespeaks her musical passion and experience. Its
melodies are largely led by the singer, herself, her accompaniment
varying widely between strong bass lines, acoustic guitar, and piano.
Her percussion is provided by both live drums and electronic,
switching as the mood of the song seems to demand. Her songwriting is
tasteful, delicately balanced, and impeccably realized in the
recording studio.
Reia cites as main artistic influences
legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Abbey Lincoln, and Nina
Simone, the last of whom is perhaps most reflected in Reia's own
work. Blended with the womanly, powerful vocal tones of Simone,
Reia's voice also recalls the singing of artists such as Jewel and
Tori Amos.
Speaking succinctly of the themes of
her new EP, Reia writes, “It’s a no-holds-barred expression of
one’s inner, feminine experience.”
