Paua releases new single, 'Feel the Fire'

The Brisbane reggae band known as Paua (often stylized PAUA) has released their long-awaited new single, “Feel the Fire.” The track is a reggae song bearing a distinctive modern edge that has come to define Paua as a fresh and contemporary crew of musicians in their genre, something more than a just another latter-day Marley spinoff. Paua's “Feel the Fire” is reggae in its truest form, powerful and funky, played deep in the groove, and bearing all of the hallmarks of fantastic music played by people who genuinely love what they are doing.

The sound of Paua is a blend of island mellow and urban summertime, like a cross between Bob Marley and the Wailers, and Southern California's eminent dub and ska band, Sublime. Still, Paua's inimitable style is their own and stands apart from other reggae bands. Their vocals are pristine. Their melodies are timeless. Their tones are upbeat, positive, and filled with the joy of life.

When asked about their impetus to create reggae music, Paua writes, “There’s a rawness to reggae music that flows; it’s infectious. 'Feel the Fire' is about letting that reggae vibe into your soul and feeling its natural groove in every part of your life.”

Paua, who take their name from the Maori name for abalone, cite as main artistic influences musical legends like Bob Marley, Musical Youth, Aswad, Maxi Priest, UB40 and Herbs, whom they deferentially refer to as “the legendary New Zealand Reggae band.”

Paua has been making very tall waves in their part of the world, waves that are only now reaching other climes. They fetched nominations in three separate categories at the 2012 Waiata Maori Music Awards, including Best Song by a Maori Artist, Best Maori Songwriter, and Best Urban Roots Album. Their single “Coming Home” from their self-titled debut record reached no. seven on the 2012 New Zealand iTunes Reggae Chart, and continues to garner praise all over the world.

“We’re out to create and share music through a blend of spirit and drive that shines of uniqueness, quality professional musicianship, and lyrics that have both meaning and inspiration,” writes lead Paua vocalist, Jay.

Their new single serves as the first delectable taste of a second Paua LP, which is due out later this year.

“Feel the Fire” by Paua is available online worldwide.
