Classical guitarist Simon James releases new LP 'The Art of the Spanish Guitar'

The guitar virtuoso known worldwide as Simon James has released his latest and grandest collection of classical guitar music, titled, “The Art of the Spanish Guitar.” The album has been released on the Designer Music Ltd. record label. Being comprised of 20 complete tracks, James' album has an approximate total listening time of nearly 90 minutes. It is the most significant and impressive official release from Simon James to date.

James' “The Art of the Spanish Guitar” is perfectly titled. The album is a definitive work, one which showcases both artist and instrument in all their glory. James' impeccable taste and knowledge of the great classics are laid bare in his careful musical selections, which masterpieces he renders with a skill and precision that is uncanny to the ear. He also proves himself entirely capable of accomplishing these monumental achievements without making the music terse or overwrought. Rather, James' playing is natural and warm, and flows from his hands with the seeming ease of water rolling downhill.

James cites as main artistic influences the works of Segovia, Julian Bream, Paco De Lucia, Paco Pena, and Sabicas. His album is a compilation of material from 1983's “Daybreak” record, and 2007's “Azahar.” It includes two bonus tracks recorded in 2012, as well. Though much of the present album comes from classical composers, some pieces are James originals.

Speaking of the record themselves, Designer Music Ltd. writes, “The album is split evenly between Flamenco, either traditional or written by Simon James, and Spanish Classical from Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega and Miguel Llobet, with one exception: the track, 'Saeta' (a Flamenco form) which was written by the contemporary British composer, Denis Aplvor. The album represents the early and the present-day solo guitar playing of Simon James, who during this same period created the band Acoustic Alchemy with Nick Webb, and Kymaera with Shane Hill. Without this solo career, the other two bands would never have come into being.”
